Group Buy Interest?

Seriously guys, this one's easy. And there's no reason for any of the GB folks to be getting bent out of shape over it. While this joint ain't exactly swimming in rules and/or enforcers, some are obvious. And commercial ventures are among the clearly obvious ones.

As a participant in the last two group buys, I have no problem with the idea that the GB thread belongs in the Classified section. And as for all the dealers that have sprung up around the GB with ancillary products and services, they don't really have a place. The classifieds aren't for dealers. Should there be a place for board members who are also dealers? Maybe there should be. But as of now there isn't.

But when long time contributors like mshilarious play by the rules and buy ad space here (and are painstakingly careful about not promoting themselves in posts--even when it would make sense), it's clearly not right that others should be free to do the same for no charge in the context of a long and meandering group buy thread.

I'm not saying the GB folks aren't offering something of value. I may do a mic upgrade. If my 73's exhibited problems, I might be interested in that kit. But the purveyors of those ware should have to reach me the same way mshilarious does--buy an ad.

It's safe to say that moving the group buy thread wouldn't dampen the group buy itself at all. And as for the others who stand to make a buck off of Chance's altruistic efforts, they should have to pay for that opportunity.

And for those who think Chance is making money off the group buy--and it's just a clever business model. I dunno, maybe so. But if so, that too would be unfair to the folks buying ads. I don't think he is making money, but if I found out otherwise, I'd want him to buy ads. And if he is in fact leveraging this experience into a future commercial venture, it's fair to say he'll have to change his approach as well. I'd further venture to say that Chance would agree with that.

Wow
I've been locked away in studio for a few days and all hell breaks loose.
First I might say that these group buys started as a way for all of us (me too) to get gear @ low cost. Now, Had I purchase all this gear myself, and offered it at cost, that would be different. Everyone involved, has invested THEIR time and money. Without you all, this could never have happened. It's a win/win situation. If someone comes up with a solution, why shouldn't he be compensated for his R&D? Again it helps all of us. I have seen posts suggesting Lundahl or Cinimag xfrmrs, or tube swaps, and to me this is all useful information for our community. If someone says XXX-7 tube is great, and we all try it with success, sure, the manufacturer of the XXX-7 tube profits, but hey, so do we, and we would never know this without someones R&D and posting it here. (Harvey got banned?)

If someone is profiting off the group buy, it doesnt belong here..

Chance had indicated at some point before the 2nd group buy that the Group Buys were a precursor to a commercial venture. I don't believe he's turning a profit now, but has the hopes of dialing in the designs then will be offering them on the open market. I kind of hope he's putting some money in his pocket, because I can only imagine the immense amount of energy it takes to repack everything and ship it out. Not to mention the customs hassles.

There was a problem with some mic pre's and Brad identified a fix. It requires some parts and a little bit of time to procure and assemble. It doesn't seem he's trying to start a commercial venture here. Just making a fix available. It is appropriate that he talks about it in this thread because it directly deals with the equipment from the group buys and with no other.

I understand MSH's position because he is a paid advertiser (and I really appreciate that, too) but I believe it's apples and oranges.

Outside of the usual HR banter, I hope this doesn't get carried away. I really would like to particpate in the next group buy and don't want Chance to pull the plug.

And hey.. look at this. The thread will be 3 years old tomorrow....

Peace... literally.

If someone comes up with a solution, why shouldn't he be compensated for his R&D?

He should, but he is not allowed to use the forum to hawk his solution.

Right, but Lundhal and Cinimag and XXX-7 are not allowed to use this forum to pitch their products.

Yeah, I think it was over a technicality, maybe his MoreMe headphones or something. But anyway, when his offense was pointed out he said, "My bad, sorry," and didn't complain.

yes Harvey was banned for like 3 days over his More Me headphones..which I guarantee he isnt making a whole lot of profit on..

It doesn't seem he's trying to start a commercial venture here.

If I quoted luthiery services as a fix for a group guitar buy issue...

Look, his post is essentially I'll fix your pre for $35. He's advertising a service for a fee.

I agree...it should have stopped at "here's the parts you need, here's where to get them, here's what to do"...

and this discussion should be taken elsewhere. this sanctimonious witchhunt is throwing the thread way the heck off topic. isn't that something that should be moderated as well?

Thanks Brad!!!!!!

I'd personally like to thank Brad.

And Chance.

For those of you who are bent at these guys making "huge profits" off a non-profit board......

Get a FREAKIN life.

I'd be surprised if Brad clears enough dough to take his family to McDonalds a couple of times. It's not a business. It's a helpful service to all of us in the GB. And it REALLY helps Chance and us out by not requiring us to send our Pre's back to Chance for warranty service.

I guess FedX and UPS and the USPS should be complaining though.....

Unbelieveable......

warranty service?

:D:D:D

what planet are you living on?

i'm pretty sure

we bought this stuff

"as is"

chance has been great

in previous gb's

to try to provide

"customer satisfaction"

but the scale of this one

pretty much precludes

him providing any

"warranty service"

which btw was never implied

up front

(i think you can ignore

the warranty

in the product manual,

meant for (i assume)

later commercial sale)

While I agree that we don't want the forums clogged up with advertising, what about those of us who aren't inclined to DIY and just want to buy whatever complete fix the poster has developed? How do we learn of it? Even if it was an ad, it would be nice to have it linked to a relevant thread in some fashion. At this point Brad is ceasing to post here, so anyone who wants to learn more about his cure for our noisy pre will have to follow the thread at the GS forum. I think that's unfortunate.

Simple solution:

Chance has a website.

midigod can administer (and presumably implement) a BBS.

They should talk.

It would spare all the announcements being spread over four different boards, too.

i think it's excellent

if he only wants to post

commercial advertisments

he can do it elsewhere

if he wants to post

some helpful diy info

along with the ads

then i don't think

anybody would object

along the lines of

"I've found a fix that will improve the hum problem with the Group Buy preamps. I've found that by doing xxxxx and yyyyy the problem is greatly improved. For those that are interested, I'd be glad to send you a kit with parts and instructions for $35."

if he wants to keep

his information proprietary

then he should

pay

for selling it here

as a commercial vendor

oh, btw

i'm glad to see the mic forum

is regaining a bit

of its former edge :)
