No one has really said what has happened with Randy... and it's really none of our business. My thoughts and prayers have and do go out to him for what ever the situation might be.
Something I don't understand though... I've been in a situation where I woke up in the hospital and stayed there for a while, my "Life" was put on hold... lucky to have one actually. For a brief period of time not even able to make a phone call. So I do know what that is all about.
From what I can tell from the posts here... Randy is in a Difficult situation. Yet at this time he's a functioning person driving himself to and from work... also meaning he's able to work. He voluntarily got involved in a Business deal (the GB) that involves 900 or so people w/, I think I read, close to $250,000 dollars. He got so involved that without his presence it hinders the GB. He set up and ran probably the largest portion of the GB, a Secure web site, Registration, Product orders and took all of our Personal and Credit Card information... that it seems no one else can take over.
Randy not being able to take 10 minutes or even up to a couple hours to get some of this straightened out because he needs to get some sleep just does not seem right. Driving from "SC to Georgia every day" I'm not sure how long that takes but I'm sure he has a Cell Phone in which in that amount of time he could answer a few questions and possibly walk you (Chance) through the steps of what needs to get done.
Everyone handles stress differently. With out too much speculation of what is taking place in his life right now... If he is a able body person this is not a situation where you just drop your involvement.
I'm sure some here will think I'm being harsh or not understanding. I'm a very understanding person and when you equate $250k and all that is taking place here in The Home Stretch of the GB with some Lost Sleep... or extra stress...
And Chance I know your "indebted to him" ... but did you ask for his involvement? I could see if he said I can't pack boxes with you next week like I thought I could... He's been a major part of this GB and if I'm not mistaken Asked for donations through PayPal for his involvement.
Come on... group hug!![]()
Okay...who didn't use deoderant?
Seriously, good post JTC. Right on the money...
OK let's hug...3 - None of this is affecting anyone in a negative way. The worst case scenario is that Chance has a few extra hours of work to do. Since the boat is still two weeks out and the gear will sit in customs for another week, delivery is unlikely to be delayed.
Everyone relaxed now? Come on... group hug!![]()
OK let's hug...
BUT (nothing at all against Chance), Chance not knowing the difference between a row and a column does not instill much confidence. Meaning, there is much more room for error doing things manually. Especially if you are using software you're unfamiliar with (excel). I'd hate for everyone to get the wrong order due to a missing comma causing all names to shift over by 1.
Look in your FedEx address book and see if they're all listed. Perhaps they were put in earlier, or maybe Randy already did it for you.
more power to you, Chance, and thanks again.
There are many among us who could speed things up a lot with access to the GB registration database, but that would require either 1) direct remote access to the database (a security no-no over the internet, in most cases) or 2) either a) carefully crafted user-level access to the server machine itself (which would likely take time/energy to set up on Randy's part) or b) administrative access to the server machine, which, if I were Randy, I wouldn't give out. It looks like a windows box, too, which tends to make things a little more difficult (or easier, depending on your intentions/point-of-view).
[Once the gosh-darned Ike-removed power comes back on at my house] I could quickly write a perl script that would turn the data into a statue of the Virgin Mary, if that's what you wanted, but to get there I'd need to get through the challenges above, which are significant.
Again, we all very much appreciate all the work you're doing, and the work Randy has done -- as noted, he's already contributed way more than his share, even with the community-foisted donations, as have you, of course.
edit:
3306/tcp open mysql
the mysql port does appear to be open, but Randy would still need to provide db connection credentials, which is spooky, and the local security may not allow for remote connections to the particular database, even with the port open.
I have faith it will all work in the end.
I'm not in the slightest bit worried about it.
It's been a fun ride so far.

And even if a few get screwed up and my order was one of them I've waited this long so the possible slight bit of inconvenience of rectifying my order wouldn't cause me any grief.
To be honest this has been one of the most fun internet based activities I've had.
Poring over vague specs and pictures, reading the endless posts of speculation, excitement and pessimism, placing my order, changing my order, rechanging my order, missing an order at deadline,Randy called, added to my order etc etc.
