On a side note regarding the functionality of the units...

I'm surprised to see so many people choosing the 73 model over the 84.

Unless you are dying to have that DI input
Brad

I asked that question already. They're all dying to get that DI input. Although, since I'm in the process of getting a 500 rack and some additional pres, I might switch my 73s over to the 84 before I'm done.

Eh, I'll go ahead and do it now....there's two more 84s and we're a little bit closer to the price break on them now.

I'm surprised to see so many people choosing the 73 model over the 84. I wonder if people realize that a Neve 1084 had the exact same preamp and EQ circuitry as the 1073, except with additional EQ features: low pass filter, hi-Q switch for the mid band, and two additional frequencies on the high shelf.

Hi Brad,

I wrestled with the same thoughts that you are having too... I figured the 73 had an EQ that was plenty flexible enough...and you get the DI... That's what sealed the deal on the 73 for me..

I understand all of what you guys are saying and the reason for my original post I guess is because like most of you guys I'd prefer to spend my (limited) time playing with the last lot of GB mics I bought or trying to write a really catchy chorus than have to read through many posts trying to find the latest relevant info. I guess this has been alleviatted somewhat with what Randy has done on the GB registration site but that really only relates to things directly from chance.

anyways, didn't mean to cause any aggrevation.....:o

Yeah Brad.

I've been wrestling with this one too.

What I've been thnking is this:

The 1073 has been plenty flexible enough to make countless incredible records. The other thought I had was that, with my engineering skills short of what I would call expert, I could get myself into less trouble with a less complicated eq section.

I have a Sansamp RBI that I could use as a DI and bring that into the 1084 I guess.

I don't know, tell me more. You may have a point here.

if you need all that EQ, you're tracking wrong.

nah, i don't really think that, i just wanted to stir things up.... ;)

isn't the whole thing about PP ruining ribbons kind of a myth?

not really...some ribbons will get toasted by phantom power, some won't, and of course now some are designed to run on phantom

unless a ribbon mic is one of the latter, i wouldn't try it, just in case

Well it's not like it's any more complicated than the 73's EQ section. We're just talking a a choice of frequencies on the high shelf instead of the fixed 12k selection and a high-Q switch on the mid band for when you don't totally want to suck out all your midrange. I would think that most of us have capable DI's on other preamps, no? Boosting 12k is sometimes a little too high and sometimes a little too low, so it's nice to have choices. :)

Does anyone have any insight into the ACM 1200 mic? Is it of the U47 or C12 variety?

thanks,
Brad

Stupid question...

How come in the preamp color voting list, Grey with White lettering (like in the pictures) is not one of the choices? I like them the way they are pictured.

Oh, and who's the wiseguy who voted for pink?

(BTW Brad, I just ordered another 84 mic pre. The order is growing.)

Oh, and who's the wiseguy who voted for pink?

Someone who doesn't want brushed alluminum. That vote is non-binding anyway. Hell, black isn't even a choice.

(BTW Brad, I just ordered another 84 mic pre. The order is growing.)

Yeah, I switched my 73s to 84s. I decided that having the DI isn't that critical to me and I'd rather have a few more eq options.

I really want to pay my money and get the ball rolling. I want to play with my new toys!!!

This venture is not for the impatient.

No doubt... If you think of it as a Christmas Present, (which is what the last Mic Buy ended up being) it'll help keep the Anticipation in check.

Soon, a lot of us in the U.S. will have our "Economic Stimulus Packages".
Mine will become a "TnC Stimulus Package". :D

I'm really hoping the 81's pick up steam. That's what I'd like to get and it would be a shame if we were only 10 units shy of getting the good price.

Brad

I'm pretty new to the GB, so apologies if this has been answered...

Is there a reason that the preamps have internal power supplies? Wouldn't it be cheaper and better from a noise perspective to do an external supply, capable of powering maybe 8 units? I'm thinking I may mod mine to operate this way, but it seems like a logical option.

Anyway, I'm in for 2 1084s, hopefully they sound as good as they look!

Chance announces color change

Just got an email from Chance. After our long conversation, instead of plain white, he's agreed to go with a Hello Kitty theme. He didn't have final photos to send me, but he sent me these mockups to post. Hope everyone likes the new look.

Chance, of course I have another question.:D

If a certain mic does not reach the quantity needed, will we have time to change out our order with a different model? I want the ACM-200 but if there are not enough buyers, I would like the ACM-300.

Thanks

Earl
