While I like the tube pres on offer now in theory, in actuality all I want out of a tube pre are gain and volume knobs, led's for signal awareness, phantom power and some pad switches... Maybe a variable impedance control too.

I agree with you on the simplicity angle - that's why I'm really most interested in the two-channel pre when it gets here. I'll probably buy one of the 73s just to get a sense of its character, but I'd much rather see a simpler version with two (or even four!) channels in one box in the long run.

However, I notice that you refer to these as "tube" pres. I've gone back through the discussion and I can't find any reference to tubes in these units. As far as I know, they are solid state. Which would make sense, since the classic units that they strive to emulate were also solid state units. (Interestingly, I can't find any mention anywhere in the last 30 pages of this thread as to exactly what kind of amplification is used in these devices.)

I hope Chance or someone will correct me here if I'm wrong.

Also, do you have any idea of how soon the two-channel pre might be ready? Typically, these group buys have been taking the better part of a year to complete. Should I expect to wait until 2009 before we're ready to talk about these? I can't imagine that you'd attempt to take on the next group buy before this one was complete - you'd have to be out of your mind! <vbg>

What I understand these ( now on GB ) are discrete transistor ( no op-amps )
transformer balanced units.

about tube: I can't remember if tube was mentioned specifically either, BUT, if I remember right, both of the prototype photos looked like two different brands' tube units. Has Chance confirmed that the guts will be the same for the two channel unit as they are for the others? I personally have little use for EQ (or rather I little know how to use it) and would prefer a unit that put more money into the other stuff inside. Variable impedance would be nice too.

And do we know if the tube in that mic is soldered in or removeable?

First timer here for the group buy

I'm registered (software working great), and I can see prices/specs...however, can someone "in the know" pm me with some details/observations on some of these products (specifically the 900 tube ribbon, the 73 pre, the FET microphone, and the tube microphone).

Bottom line is that this thread is HUGE and tough to wade through - and I REALLY value your opinions as to what is the "shiznit" here given that I'm wading into the GB thing completely cold here.

Any advice/application details/recommendations would be MOST welcome as I'd love to help out with the overall numbers, but I want to target buying for my needs...

Also very interested in "what" the price break would be for over 200 units on the ACMP 73

Oh, another specific question - which of these microphones would be useful as a room reference mic? I know that this is rf-plot specific, so again I'd be perfectly happy relying on some of the really informed advice here.

Unless the mics were part of the last GB, near as I can tell, no one on this Board but Chance would have any experience with them. Same for the mic pres. The pres are new and were not part of the last GB. They were designed and will be built specially for this GB. I expect Chance wil be able to tell us whether mounts will come with particular mics. If a mic is a tube mic, I'd expect that a power supply would be provided as they aren't sold separately.

In some respects, the bottom line here is we are all taking a flyer on this gear and hoping that it's decent or maybe even pretty good. If you are uncomfortable with that, maybe the GB isn't for you.

Chance has more than proven that he can arrange for and deliver on the manufacture of inexpensive audio gear from China. The unkown is how good the gear will really be. The pres have upped the ante a bit this time. They are a more complex device and there may be more opportunity, perhaps, for them to have issues.

But the mics and the pres are really, really cheap, and I for one don't mind rolling the dice at this price level. YMMV

Same here (willing to roll the dice)...just want some specific recommendations if anyone has them....for example, it seems Chance is really keen on the 900 tube ribbon for guitar cabs (I think, unless I've misread the thread). If that's the case, I'll order a 900 to try on guitar cabs...sounds great to me (does that make sense). While I'm willing to go blind, I'd love some knowledgeable, "you might think about getting one of these for X...." (if that makes sense).

I completely understand that we can't mention brand names, etc. on the forum given the marketing issues and future distribution issues. So I was asking for PM's or emails on that data. I.e. what these things are designed to emulate (especially the pres...I think I can figure it out given the item specs, but it's always better to hear from someone knowledgeable).

No worries - would still like info (pm or otherwise) on what is meant (in dollars) by "price break once we reach 200 units". I will certainly roll the dice in that type of scenario just to help some guys out here, but I don't know what the "break" is at this point.

I'll keep checking the email and see what comes up.

yeah with the new products, it's definitely a crap shoot, but one guy i know bought one of each mic last go round. it cost about $850-$900 after shipping and paypal fees. he figured if ONE of the mics was awesome, then it was worth it. turns out he's found uses for more than half of them and has been using a lot of them as his go to mics. the same has been true for myself and everyone else i know that got in on this. after my experience with that group buy, i ultimately trust chance's word that a piece of gear sounds as good as he says it sounds. the pres are modeled after N*ve pres, and chance said he and his n*ve tech couldn't hear the difference between these pres and the original n*ves. so even if it sounds ALMOST the same, it's STILL a major bargain, and to be quite honest, if you hate it, you can sling it on ebay and probably turn a profit once chance is selling them to the general public for considerably more than we're paying. everyone wins. chance gets a whole shit load of beta testers, so to speak, and we get bangin gear for peanuts.

I like my CAD e300 II on vocals, but I haven't been able to stop using the 6802 since the last GB. It's got some really nice mids and just sounds nice on my voice. I had a guy recording on Saturday who has a really thin, high voice, that would have been way too much for some of the more shrill mics out there. He sounded pretty good with the 6802.

I think Marik had some concern about the life of the tube with the voltage of the p.s. supply being a little high. He recommended a fix for it. I can't remember if he thought it was too high for the tubes he was putting in it or too high for the stock tube as well (the unit he was working on had already had a different tube put in it).

I don't know if anyone else who has modded theirs had any concerns. I haven't opened mine up except to look at it, and ... it has wires and stuff and a tube inside , but it sounds good to me. It will be interesting to see how people think it compares to the 1200 (that's the new tube one, right?) or for that matter, it would be interesting to hear how anyone thinks the 6802 stacks up against the weapon tube that the 1200 resembles The 6802 is the only tube mic I have experience with, and I find myself unable to complain about it, especially for the price I paid.
