Group Buy Interest?

Sounds like we should get a poll started as Chance mentioned to get an idea of how many units will likely be ordered.

Chance: can you describe the differences between the 4 units so that it's clear and then one of us will create the poll?

Fair enough. When I was first clued into the last GB the specs for the mics had been published already so I guess I sorta expected to see some right away with this.

My decision to buy a mic was based solely on those specs because I could not seem to find any subjective listening tests in the thread.

I don't doubt that you know what you're talking about when you say something has great sound but if you can get ahold of the specs and then tell us that your listen tests indicate the units meet or exceed the specs than that would be some good valuable info and possibly result in some more orders. :D

Hi Kojdogg,

Ironically, I found this message googling 6J1B-q for ACM 310 :).
I could not find any useful data for the tube--even its pinout.
I gathered that it is a pentode. It however is connected the very weird way--as a straight triode. I suspect they used a screen (second grid) as an anode, but just did not do it properly.

Take the mic and get close to fluorescent light. Do you hear a terrible hum coming out the mic?--that's the consequence.
I just changed it for a "good 'n old" 5840.
For now I put in a Cinemag 2480, but the ratio for the tube is little bit off. Will see if can find something closer, which physically fits.

Just be careful not to lift traces on PCB--on mine one of them was damged already straight from factory.
 
thanks for the tip! please let us know how it goes with the 2480's or if you find a more suitable transformer (peluso p-11 perhaps?)
 
Just a little information I thught I would pass on to everyone on the mic pre. This manufacturer is not the same as for the mics. Well,, it is and it isn't. I have the relationship with the parent company. The parent company has divisions. There is the microphone division, and there is the electronic division. The electronic division makes a lot of hi-end components for hi end gear that we all know. I have been invited to go there and work/share with the engineers in the mic and electronic division. My limited knowledge in these fields would probably be a waste of their time and money. When I informed them of Marik's suggestion of packing the mics rotated 90 degrees, their reply was "YES, YES, thats must be it, THANK YOU, brilliant!!" LOL (duh) If this is indeed the problem, just think of all the other brands that are going to benifit.
Sure,, I would love the free trip, but I have a lot of recording commitments and no time. Perhaps someone with knowledge could go for a couple weeks on our behalf ? Just a thought for better QC.

I am not familiar with P-11.
I actually cannot reach Oliver for almost a week, as looking at his site I see T14 Hiller style transformer to fit C60. The ratio is too big but usually he can wind any ratio you want (or even has it, but doesn't list). So I need to talk to him, first.

My main problem with the mic was a serious lack of bass, so at first I blamed it on a tiny-tiny stock transformer--the reason I changed it. Things improved, but not by much. After that I tried it with Oktava 012 capsule with special adapter--the bass was immediately there, which points out there is something going on with the stock capsule itself.

I took it apart and... :eek::eek::eek:
the thingie is constructed basically from MXL603 capsule parts--diaphragm and backplate, just put into bigger outside body.

So I did exactly the same surgery as for 603--re-machine and re-drill backplate to increase diaphragm damping, which immediately brought out nice and deep bass.
If interested, make a search, I think I posted about it somewhere on Prodigy a few years ago.

Now it is an awsome mic, with deep bass and very extended and smooth highs.

Just to keep me on the same page, so to speak, this is the ACM-310 we're talking about? (I did trace through the posts, I'm just not 100% confident with my determination)

Yes, here we are talking about ACM-310.
I cannot reach Oliver so the 6802 is on hold at the moment.

Understood. What you're saying about the 310 makes me wonder if it's thinkable to take a MXL omni capsule that was intended for the 603, and somehow squish it into the 310? I just happen to have an extra :)

I looked with no luck. Any chance you could provide a link? Before that is this a home DIY project? Drilling a back plate is one thing but re-machineing is another.
