OK, I am trying to think ahead. If they agree and ship the ribbon motors, what do we do about shipping to y'all. Maybe we should just take it one step at a time and wait for their response first.

Is the ribbon motor the same for the 2 & 3?

They look to be the same, though I certainly can't say for sure.

And what about returning the old one? Return shipping may more than the part is worth.

I really don't think they would want them back. On the last GB, there was a bad capsule on one of the tube mics and I had a new capsule in three days. This time, with so many, I can't say for certain.

I am cool with it. I just tore my two ACM3s and ACM2 apart and the ribbons are indeed super floppy. My ACM1 looks to be just fine.

Hi Chance,

just popping over from PSW...

My AC-3 sounds generally fine but does exhibit that top end darkness others have mentioned who have ribbon problems.
I have not actually opened it up but from what has been said, it is most likely that mine is sagging too.
If sag is from the ribbon losing its memory, it could be that the mic will sound different in a years time, which is where I would be concerned.

hope this helps in your discussion with China.

Hello to everybody btw!

I had ordered a couple shockmounts for my ACM 3's that I'm still waiting on... You could put the new motors with shockmounts...?

That's a good idea.

If replacing the "motor" means not having to touch the delicate ribbon then yes that sounds easy enough. Trying to tension the Ribbon sounds like a total crap shoot, even for those with experience. Maybe someone who has a little more experience repairing mics could do a little video and put it on You Tube. That would probably give others more confidence in what they're doing.

Question:
Is "the ribbon losing its memory" a normal part of a Ribbon mics life cycle? Doesn't seem right. Who would buy a $1500 mic (Royer ect...) knowing it's going to lose it's sound.
So... why do the Cheap Chinese Mics lose memory?

B.

Hello to everybody btw!

Hey Barkley
Yeah, I'm constantly traveling back and forth between here and PSW.

OK all but one PP requests have been sent out. Everything is packed and ready to ship

I just got an E-mail from someone that got the tube mics. BURN THEM IN FOR 24 HOURS! Theres a big difference. Also after you have burned them in, each time you use them, warm them up for 30 minutes before using.

On another note, I was on Avant's site, and they offer (besides the 6072-A tube) a ECC-81 and a ECC-83 tube for different charactor. I don't know how this would affect other mics, but thought I would mention it.

iirc you can also use 12ax7's, 12at7's, and 12ay7's/6072/6072a tubes interchangeably in these mics, though i'd definitely defer to one of the smart tech-savy dudes here on that. i know i used all of those in my 12ax7 mics.

All orders have been shipped. I am waiting for a response on the request for ribbon motors.

I lied, All orders have NOT been shipped. I have 4 orders (one large) that have not responded to the shipping request. I don't know if they moved or what. I have sent many PP request reminders, (these were some of the FIRST to have been shipped) I'm not sure what to do. These are large orders and take up a lot of room.

Hey Chance I'd be happy to take some of those off your hands and out of your warehouse. I,d even take some of the ribbons you've been having trouble with. It would be fun to try some mods on any of these.:):)

Why don't you post identifying information on them here and PSW - maybe a name and geographical location.

I assume you have emailed them, since you have an email address on all of us. (I guess these are the PP request reminders?)

If they don't respond within what you'd consider a reasonable time (considering the xmas crunch), then you should sell them and keep the money for another period of time in case they finally show and need a refund.

OK I'll look up the location and post later today. Just to be fair, I'll wait till after the NAMM show, keep sending reminders, and make every attempt to locate them. They have a good chunk of change invested so it might just be a communication problem. Maybe they have changed their E-dress from which the PP requests are generated from. After January, if nothing developes, I will reverse their pay pal payment. The mics that are involved are 10 ACM-1, 2 cases of ACM-310 (8 mics), 2 cases of ACM-6802 (8 mics), 1 case of ACM-3 (12 mics) 10 583's. Thats just off the top of my head. I have to look at their invoices for an accurate count.
