So now that Chance is gone for the week who else is feeling left out because they haven't even gotten their paypal shipping request yet? Well, at least we will have the stuff from the next group buy first (see post 1888)

I don't think they're patent would hold up. Anyone familiar with the art would think... "Hmmmm, what's light and conductive?"

At least if the ribbon were made of pancakes, it would fit into a Fathead-style body with no modification :D

Ribbon material?

Anyone know a good place to get some new aluminum leaf for my goof up. I really wish I wouldn't have had to open it up but here I am. It's what?, 2 microns thick, does that leave out reynolds wrap? Help me people. Thanks

Here's a couple of links.

You can get the aluminum leaf at a craft store such as Michael's or Joanne's. It's about $5-$6 for 25 sheets. The stuff is a real bitch to work with.

You might also try cigarrette package or candy foil. I don't know if it's too thick.

In any case, good fuckin' luck - you'll need it. :)

I like that second link, very interesting... uggliest microphone I think I've ever seen, but very interesting, and sheds some light on the simplicity of ribbon microphones.

I use that stuff too, it takes practice but it's cheap! The 2 micron stuff is shockingly expensive

One thing to note about the technique on his site--leave the leaf in the paper while you corrugate it!

Just checking in from Chicago. Anyone in need of ribbons, I would think China should supply them. I can't recieve my Email from here, and I can't call them, but I should have some info when I return on Saturday morning.

Ooh, just like gym class.

That would be excellent, Chance. I don't have an immediate need, but I think it would be an excellent idea to have some spare ribbons on hand. The difficulty, though, might be in how to pack them for shipment and storage, especially if they are pre-cut and pre-corrugated.

I've toyed with the idea of buying some bulk foil in the right thickness, but cutting and corrugating it are non-trivial tasks, and the foil itself is pretty expensive.

I'm in worse shape, got my mics and the mobo on my computer died the next day. Just rebuilt it last night, and have a 6 AM flight tomorrow. Feels like i will never get to try these out with some recordings. They sit in their fine cases taunting me the whole time.

Everyday I check my email and paypal account, and everyday I feel the bitter sting of disappointment. But I am strong. The paypal request will come...

oh yes, it will come.

I want to add my thanks to Chance for all the work he has done on this. It was no small undertaking and I appreciate everything he has done. THANKS CHANCE!!

Now the question is...how much sag will my ribbon mics have? :)

Absolutely right!

I'm still waiting for a shipping invoice, too -- in my case, I think it's good, because it's very likely that I would have ruined all my mics by now if I had them without the benefit of the experimentation and lengthy discussion of the pioneers who got them early. (oh, and I'm not a drummer :) )

I did get in on the stupid buy last week for the RSM-4, and it arrived today. I'll be able to practice on that in the meantime. It'll be sort of like that mean kid's room in Toy Story.
