... As you will see, 797 Audio changed our design on our VTB1 and put out a kind of clone

Does anyone see this?

I see a clone of a PRESONUS unit... but nothing like a VTB1.

I'm with JTC.

What a poo-poo head

Okay, now that we've settled that....

....if anyone is looking for a good reason to be pissed at Chance, how about we give him some grief for not making those LA2A clones part of this GB?

Chance, WTF???
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Ok.. I usually am fairly quiet on the boards. I have just been soaking everything in and quietly wait for my pre amps to arrive.

But, everyone loves a conspiracy theory...here is my warped take on this whole situation with Mr. Hyatt....

Mr. Hyatt does indeed go to 797 Audio for his business to oversee his next great creation, or check on exisiting products. While there, his buddy from 797 Audio tells Mr. Hyatt about our little group buy and demonstrates the product. Mr Hyatt is actually amazed at the sound and wants to know the hows and whys of this particular unit, as it sounds way better than the units he had passed on previously. 797 Audio, sadly, says that it is a proprietary design and cannot show it to him. Mr. Hyatt, in a mad desire to get his hands on the schematics for this great sounding pre, jumps on to different forums where the group buy is happening, and accuses Chance of being less than truthful (although still a good guy), the pre-amps sub par (although still a good buy) and yesterdays news as far as he sees. Mr. Hyatt then challenges Chance to prove him wrong and post his schematics on line to refute his claim, but the real motive is so he can see them and steal Chance's ideas to modify and put them in the long awaited, never seen, seldom talked about, vaporware Studio Project two channel "VTB-2" pre-amp, as there is still design and parts issues. My Hyatt then posts pictures on said forums of the outside of the units to prove his claim that the inside of the unit is different then what Chance claims. The group buy particpants dissolve into mass chaos over the pictures due to laughter.

In the end, the group buy participants love cheap grear and trust Chance, and no one really gives a flying crap about Mr. Hyatt's claims anymore and start using their C1's for hammers.

Whew...well there you go. I have laid it all out in black and white, so surely it is the truth!

What? The pre-amp is supposed to be a direct clone of his mixing board's pre-amps (which he loves). The schematic is readily available for that board. Alan could just get it directly.

Everything is copied in china even the copies are copied. No magic here.

My guess (which is what all this is - guesses)) is that there is a lot going on here that we aren't aware of. But in the end, we are going to get a hell of a deal on this equipment that's going to come on the market soon at triple the price.

Brutus' exquisite gift for parody is apparently lost on MCI2424. :)

And for all those pictures he posted, did he tell us anything we didn't already know from this?

Thanks Gareth.
I have the ability to quickly recognize assholes, having been one myself on many occasions. ;)

Anyone decent would have contacted Chance privately with this information, where they could have come to some "conclusion" over what has happened without causing such a stir to the buyers. Then if Chance decided he could let us know and Alan could still have posted his pictures of some 797 units that may or may not be the same.

If this is the way PMI does business I think I'll be avoiding them from now on.

A well-known mic modder told me last week that the K67 capsule made by this particular vendor is truly a great piece of hardware.

I'm pretty sure that the microphones are coming from a different factory/company/vendor than the preamps. That's what I remember from earlier posts, at least. The mics I got in past buys are great, especially for the money; I'm not at all concerned with where they come from.

Maybe we should all start making accusation against anyone we want in this thread? Wouldn't that be nice?

The process of not questioning got us into Iraq. Bad analogy...but not really.

Anyone starting a group buy should be prepared for whatever trouble may come. I have faith in Chance. I also believe he should defend his position (within reason).

Oh STFU (and I mean that in the nicest possible way :)).
Bad analogy.....REALLY REALLY!!!

No one, myself included, said that no one should or could ask questions. My point was that the onus shouldn't be on Chance to defend himself against scurrilous and questionable accusations by someone who clearly has an interest in these kinds of GBs not becoming too popular, especially when those accusations are set up by using straw-man arguments.

So if we're going to engage in bad political analogies, it's like when John McCain, who I affectionately like to call "George III" says that it's irresponsible for his democratic opponents to call for passage of a new GI bill with greater educational benefits because it will result in a 16% reduction in retention reducing our troop strength... conveniently leaving out the line from the same report that said it would also result in a 16% increase in enlistment.

Fuck John McCain and fuck the asshat who found he needed to lie through his teeth to making unfounded accusations against Chance.

So if these are already designed and manufactured, we'll get them sooner!

Yippee!

Thanks again, Chance.

It's what i expected , a stock chinese design , being resold
not worried about who takes credit or expect it to be more
than a chinese preamp , just a good starting point .
Gotta wonder why anyone would be motivated to take
a less than positive route ?

These are the three units you all will be able to buy from Chance along with an LA2A clone(no photo)...

Alan, it does seem likely that those are the pres we're going to be getting, particularly since the model numbers match and the photos were taken last night (unless the date/time on your Camera is off, Alan---you said you met with them this morning, so I suspect you got the AM/PM setting wrong when you set its clock). That doesn't necessarily mean that they bear any resemblance internally to the ones you passed on last year, though.

More to the point, ISTR that part of the cost reduction on many GB items in the past was because Chance gave up exclusive rights on the designs. At that point, all rights to the designs belong to the manufacturer, and while it would be nice if they gave Chance's tech credit, there's no compelling reason for them to do so---the design is theirs---and they may not even know who the guy is.

Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill here. Yes, they're reselling the same pres under their name. If anyone is at all surprised by that, you haven't paid attention to the last couple of group buys. That by itself tells us very little about what we are getting.... :)

Yes, but what about this LA2A clone? Do we have to wait until next year for this, or can it be piggybacked on our current orders?
