My PM boxes are full. As far as colour goes, is there an organized way we could see what the majority would prefer? That would be fine with me.

"I'm fine with any color but I really hate the brushed alluminum look. The cheaper Focusrite line has that and it's hard as hell to read anything on it because it catches way too much light."
Agreed!

If we knew what the color options were, we could set up a poll here on the board and have people vote... That seems organized enough...

I could also build a poll inside the User Console so that only registered people can vote and can limit the voting to one time per registered email address...

For my opinion on color, please refer to: PreAmp Color Preference :D

Randy - THANKS. Registered, up and running, ordered. Now.....to do a little more research on the 126 pages to see if I want to order more. :D

Best,

bp

PS - will there be the availability for local pickup in LA after the units arrive?

I know I originally created more color comps than we are now considering, but here's a visual reference point I did for us a while back:

If we get a definitive answer on what the ooptions are, I'll remove the extras to avoid confusion, then we could set up a poll and reference the pics.

I don't know this for a fact. I only know that the 3 pres are modeled after the ORIGINAL 73, 81, and 84
My bad then. I thought I had read earlier that they were identical. I also thought you and your buddy did the designs yourselves.

A color poll limited to people in the group buy would be cool... although I don't want this to drag along any more than it needs to.

My vote for color is DEFINITELY white. Dark red lettering on white would be cool, but black lettering on white would be fine.

If I were a for-fun kind of guy, I'd say go for the crazy colors and slick look, but I'm a full-timer and that means:
a) I need sh!t to be easy to read... and easy to read in the dark (black on white is the easiest to read in the dark, hands down).
b) I prefer stuff to look more pro and understanded than consumer and flashy. Bright and/or shiny colors in a studio rack tend to look a little silly.

Tip: for maximum contrast on blue, use really dark blue with intense yellow lettering. This has the luminance contrast for the rods, but also has the advantage of hitting opposite cones for the color as well, making it the easiest to read color scheme.

Anyone know if I decide to get a 73 and an 81 and use one for the right overhead and one for the left overhead of a drum kit with both eqs the same (or bypassed) if it will sound differently? I need to know this, otherwise I'm going to have a very strange sounding drum kit :)

Honestly, I'm really liking the bright orange and purple colors for the preamp from the link above

How would we know if we've never used them? Use your heads and eyes please.

Ugh! Can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE limit the choices to the high contrast/easy to read variations. Otherwise, we're liable to wind up with something like this...

14% Bright Orange
6% Rust Orange
13% White w/red
13% White w/black
12% Blue
8% Green
10% Red
10% Teal
11% Purple
3% Pink

In that scenario, 26% want white with either black or red lettering, but we all wind up with cheesy orange. If we're gonna vote, the choices should be limited or it's gotta be some kind of elimination thing so we don't wind up with something unreadable.

OR WE COULD JUST LET CHANCE PICK IT!!!

They probably will sound different. Chance has confirmed that the pres are modeled after the originals, which are different.

In any case, if you are interested in using them as a stereo pair you should buy a pair! That goes for the 84 (which should sound the same as the 73). That way you can match eq settings as well.

And regarding colors:

WE WENT THROUGH THIS BEFORE.

They are white. Let's not introduce needless complication at this point.

PLEASE!

I agree....unless these colors are so awesome that they make the pre's sound better....who really cares....I say..Chance, Pick a color and send me my pres.... :p

i agree with emerrill, we should just leave it white so we can move forward with the buy.

I agree with this and the other post advocating to move on and let Chance pick the color. I didn't mean to complicate things by referring to the colors from earlier. I just thought there was a legitimate call for a poll and this would speed that up.

But I agree--we don't even need a poll. Let Chance choose and let's move on.

Sorry if I contributed to a complication...

+5 to Chance choosing the color. My wife'll tell you I can't be trusted even to choose what color clothes I'm wearing.
