Ok, here's my guess. In the interest of full disclosure I had less time than I'd like to listen - our bathroom ceiling is taking in water right now. Such is life in Seattle late fall...

First off, I like the song and the recording :)

Here goes:
1. Most distorted - (ACMP at hot gain levels)?
2. Second most distorted - (ACMP at normal gain levels)?
3. Cleanest - (bounce to disc)?
4. Second most clean - (analog out to analog in on the 192 i/o)?

Given the song itself I'd say I dislike 3 the most, the one that's the cleanest to my ears, which I assume is the Bounce to Disk. It sounds a bit too sterile for the material.

If I'm right about that then the ACMP's are going to be excellent for keeping elements of a mix rooted to a spacial floor (like tape), as opposed to a digital recording that lacks a floor ...or soul. But now I'm just placing my own hopes on what I think I'm hearing.

What's the word Bill? Are my ears on tight?

Not quite.....:D

man, it was clear as a bell to me as I did it. I'll try to listen again, but it's hard to erase what you know to be true. Here's the results:

1 - ACMP - 10:00/10:00 gain positions (warm, but not smoking....)
2 - Analog out to Analog In 192
3 - ACMP - 11:00/9:00 gain positions (hot - clipping LED's coming on at times, but no audible distortion to my ears)
4 - PTHD Internal Bounce to Disc

LOL, you were dead wrong on that one. ??? 180 off. Oh well, we all hear things differently - that's what makes the world interesting, eh???

Thanks for playing though!!!! I'm glad at least a few of us had some fun.....

Doh! So my least fav was the ACMP at high gain. I'm going to listen again tomorrow at higher volume and with different sets of speakers.

Have you had a chance to use one of the ACMP pre's as a DI for bass yet? Curious about that.

Sent you...

a PM.

Had a chance to listen to these yesterday finally (fortunate enough to borrow a very nice white line connection for a few minutes).

Excellent Jay!!! Glad you had the opportunity. Obviously, you have good ears.... :D:D:D Not don't wreck that with loud guns and bombs!!!

I'll keep the ear protection handy!

In any case, concerning the 81's, I will be glued to the threads about the eq board fixes as I really bought 2 of them for exactly this - final mix reamping with outboard eq ability.

I'll pm you again once I get closer to getting home just to pick your brain with regard to my own equipment and putting all these pieces together.

Thanks!

Glad to see my ears aren't too bad! I liked (as in my previous post) the 81 overdriven best, then the not overdriven 81 2nd best.

It's funny because I'm always saying that ITB bouncing sounds fine, and I do think it was very close. But the 81 did give a little something nice...

I didnt order any 81's...I have an 84 and two 73's commin though. I remember seeing somewhere where someone was talkin about some banjo recordings with some of this new gear....Todd Taylor is a good friend of mine ( http://www.myspace.com/toddtaylorbanjoman ) and I had dinner with him last night and mentioned doing a shoot out with him on some of these mics and pre's....this guy does all of his own recording and engineering and has a ton of Grammy Nominations and believe it or not, he swears by the Nady 1050 tube mic on his banjo so it will be included in the shoot out...he has a ton of gear and mics including several neuman mics that take a back seat to his nady.....anyway....any requests on setups that anyone would like to hear? It may be a while since I have not even been invoiced on my group buy stuff yet...but as soon as I get it and can get things set up with Todd...Ill get stuff posted....

Fun to go over this thread again. Still using the 81's often. Used one with a joly modded 205 on a harmon muted trumpet player the other day. He LOVED it. Best sound he's ever had on an album. And he's tried everything from MXL's to real 47's to 87's to 57's to ??? ......

A UM70 came close, but he really fell in love with the ribbons. He could just "work the mic" better than a condenser. The two GB ribbons - ACM2 & ACM3 - came in a close 2nd & 3rd in the mic shootout, but my fav (by far) was the 205 due to a more open top and huge round bottom with a midrange that didn't build up in the track. Now, drop a Lundahl into the ACM's and it's anyone's guess. I'll get to that sometime......

Anyway, still digging the pre's (all of em) even after all the drama over here. Haven't been around much due to the heavy handed schenanigans that "were necessary" by the mods it seems. Nice to stop in once in awhile though.

cheers.
