Grounding problem in Fender Marcus Miller Jazz

I have a nice Fender Marcus Miller Jazz that has a couple of problems. One is that the active part of the active/passive system isn't working, but that is a lesser concern. The bigger problem is that there seems to be a grounding issue such that there is a very loud buzz unless I touch one of the volume knobs or the metal shield of the plug on the cable. I'm comfortable with soldering and such, but have never done any work specifically with guitar wiring. Are there any common problem spots to check first, or is it just a matter of poking around until I find it? Thanks!

Make sure you've got a fresh battery in there, also check that the leads off the battery clip are soldered properly and the clip itself isn't damaged. How long have you had the bass? It may be a warrantee fix.

Yeah, it sounds as if the non-operative active circuitry and the grounding issue may be related.
