I have just been offered a second hand one for $175, is this a good deal?

I need it to record male vocals, NO instruments and will run it through a BlueTube preamp into a Delta 44 soundcard.

Does this sound suitable?

NO! Its not a good deal. You can walk into any guitar center and hagle them for 5 minutes and they'll come down to 150 on that mic. The most you'd have to pay there is 170, and thats for brand new instead of second hand. I just bought a gt57 which is the multi pattern version of the gt55 and they let me have it for 250 out the door.

Well I paid around $125 for mine used, well I don't think it was actually put to use because everything was still in the plastic. Guitar Center was selling them for around $150 a few months ago. I don't know if they still are. If you can't find one cheaper and it comes with the shockmount then it is a pretty good deal. Some people I know paid around 250-300 for theirs. Now concerning the sound, I really like my gt55. To me it kinda has a flat sound with a nice sparkle. It can be bright at times, but it isn't harsh. I've used it to record rap, r&b, some rock, and gospel(the db pad really comes in handy here). It's not my favorite mic for my vocals but it works really well with some others. If you have a nice baritone voice it will really shine. Too bad you aren't using it for instruments because it really excels at that. Hopefully some else can tell you if GC is still offering that deal.

So which mic IS your favourite for recording RnB vocals?

Well I like the gt55 for a male bass singer or female soprano. For a tenor or alto that has great voice I like something pretty neutral like a cad m37(m177 or m179, they all basically have the same sound) or an at4040. I'm not saying the gt55 sounds bad on a tenor or alto, but I like other mics better sometimes.

I like the Shure SM7 for that purpose. Works pretty well for most singers. The RE-20 is pretty good too.

i just got an ad for a big sale that guitar center is having this month and yes, the gt55 is selling for around $150. I was actually considering investing in that mic,but I wasn't sure how it would sound with me recording mostly metal bands. I guess I could always use it on vocals, hopefully it won't be too bright for the "screamers", because most of them want darker vocals. But yeah, the sale's still going on. take care guys

It's a good mic...and I'm selling mine with shockmount for $150. It's been used twice on guitar. I got it at GC at Christmas for $150 but they stick you for like $28 on the shockmount.

Anyway, good luck,
