Oh crap, so much going on I missed the deadline. :P
You can give a listen just for fun now:

Yeah, it's unfinished. :eatpopcorn:

Hey AkaraEtt...ya...I agree with your assessment of the vocals in the mix. Funny actually, I was listening to some of the other mixes...and I thought THEIR vocals were too quiet...went back to mine and thought nah....mine were probably too loud...

Ah man, missed the deadline but got the tracks a while back. Thanks for the practice, Greg!

Not that you need any help on this Greg, and I'm just looking at the last page of mixes:
Pahtcub - guitars too loud for me, but overall pretty balanced
Turkeyoverlord - nice drum compression, but perhaps the kick is compressing things a touch too much during intro. Very narrow...and instinctively harsher on the mids. Still works...takes some getting used to. Vocal doesn't quite occupy the space I'd instinctively want it to.
Ace Tone - vocals too up front, and needs levelling. but nice balance between guitars and drums

Overall I would've wanted to hear a strong controlled bassline, super-audible vocals, and guitars tickling your ears without masking the vocal.

My Cymbals sound like shite at the start. Hadn't noticed on the really bass heavy speakers I was using. Relistened now though. Bummer deadlines gone :P

I apologize for the delay. I've come down with a little cold and my head and ears have been all plugged up. Results early next week.

Dude, the fact that you are willing to go though all this...take the time to feel better.

Just now listened to Greg's mix for the first time. The biggest difference I hear is in the LF, bass and kick.

I did my mix with no references other than my fading memory of Clash songs I was familiar with (London Calling, Rock the Casbah, Should I Stay or Should I Go) until I thought I was 100% done, then I listened to the original and made some changes (like the fade out). Hearing the original gave me "permission" to break from my default mix in several ways.

No. This thread is not for that. Thanks.

Results coming tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for your patience.

Sorry Mate
I didn't read it properly I thought it was open to anyone.

Remember this one??

And apparently I was a judge on one of your songs because I have a whole bunch of mixes from other people. Here's one from Bulls Hit....

Holy Crap! I forgot all about Texas Terror. I need to do something with that. That's some fine drumming! Fucking cowbell! Damn. I wonder if I still have that project saved somewhere. I do remember back then having to print effects onto my tracks because my computer couldn't handle the work and I think some of those tracks were jacked up.

I do remember the suffragette contest. That one was pretty good.

Just wanna remind you, you used a Strat on that song. ha ha ha.... But yeah, great song. I picture a typical Houston Girl driving the big Ford Expedition down 610, cellphone in one hand, lipstick in the other, checking herself out in the rearview mirror, screaming kid in the back seat, bag of groceries from Walmart rolling all over the floor.... <sigh>there are some things about Texas I don't like.

Lol, I've used a Strat on a bunch of songs. I'm very vocal about my hatred for Strats, but I've also always said I do like mine and mine only. It's not like a typical Strat. There's something about it's bridge pickup that just works better for me than any other Strat I've ever tried out. It's less screechy. Not as searingly bright as usual Strats. But since getting the Hallmark 60 Custom, the Strat has gone untouched. It doesn't even have strings on it right now.

Okay, the results are in!

I've listened to each mix several times on the monitors, on headphones, in the car, on earbuds, on the old hi-fi, and I stand behind my decisions and critiques. If you disagree with my findings, that's cool. To each their own, but I'm the all-powerful judge for this one. :D

For those of you that submitted multiple mixes, I only considered your last submission. I did listen to to all of them though, and for some of you, you should have stayed with your gut. Some of you got tinkering and made your mixes worse. Anyway, here we go.....this is in no particular order. Well, maybe alphabetical order, but that's it.

ace tone:
Pretty good overall. The bass is masking the kick and it's a little too up front.

bartekkck:
Sounds like it's pumping with compression and the vocals are piercing bright and way too out front. Drums are too buried.

bouldersoundguy:
Whoa dude, way too hammered. Mashed, smashed, and undefined. Some pumping going on. Sounds like it was recorded live in a basement. That's kind of cool, but not a clean mix. Kudos on getting the fadeout in there.

crowsoffritz:
A lot of rumble and mud in the lows and low mids. Kick is too woofy. Snare compressed a little too much. I'd like more spread in the overheads. I like the thickness in the guitars. Guitars are good.

DM60:
Mix just sounds too small. Rhythm guitars are MIA, bass is way too loud and proud. Drums small and distant. It's all bass and vocals.

Dr Spring Reverb:
I LOVE the vintage Ramones/60s style mix. Guitar on one side, bass on the other. Very cool touch, and I wanna score it high because it seems as if you're trying to butter me up (haha), but unfortunately it doesn't work for the song IMO. The warbly accent guitar throws me off, the bass is just too booming, and the drums are a little too buried. Maybe if it were balanced out a little better...I love the mix style though.

GT300XX:
Lot of low end build up in the bass, kick is woofy, and the whole mix has a mid-scooped sound to it. The lows are out of control, the highs are pretty bright. Needs better balance to me. The reverb or whatever effect you used on the backing vocals is too much. The overall levels seem pretty good though.

guitarplayr82:
Strong mix. The bass gtr might be a little much in the lows, but not too bad. I think it's more a level thing with the bass. Drop it a hair and I think this mix would be very good. Well done. Front runner so far....

Leander San:
This one's not too far off. A little pumpy with the compression and the kick is too much. With the exception of the kick, it's a little light in the bottom end. The vocal effects aren't thrilling me. Snare is a little too tight and thin, but not too bad. Toms sound real good.

Llarion:
Not too bad. Bass is too boomy and kind of stomping all over everything. Rhythm guitars too weak in the mix. Vocals sound real good although the delay is a little too much.

maor:
This one seems really smashed, but not so much in a bad way like some of the others. The drums and bass are really mashed up, but I like the growly bass tone. It's almost like an "industrial" mix. I think this one is pretty cool, but I'd like the rhythm guitars wider. I like the liberties you took during the "ska" part. Not a great mix technically, but I do like it for some reason.

Neil Gard:
Your file won't work for me for some reason. Sorry.

olli-h:
Pretty good mix. Bass is lacking a little definition and attack. I'd like more kick. Musically it's a good mix to me. What hurts this mix the most IMO is the vocals. Too thin, too roomy and distant.

pahtcub:
I love me some guitars, but this is too much. Way too much guitar, too much backing vocal, not enough anything else.

PDP:
There's like a cloud of low mid muck over the mix. The kick and bass are woofy. Bass is too loud in the mix. Not enough separation and shine overall. Vocals sound pretty good, but there are times the backing vocals get weird like at 2:05. The "ska" guitars sound real good.

perfektchaos:
Way too hot and compressed. It's harsh in the highs and a rumbly mess in the lows. Just too overcooked.

RayC:
I like the liberties you took with the rhythm guitars. The kick lacks definition and is pretty woofy. The woofy kick and bass way up in the mix make it seem out of balance. The vocals are too far back in the mix and small. Guitars sound good though.

simman:
This mix is similar too the perfektchaos mix in that it's harsh up high and too rumbly down low. It's not as loud, so it's less ear damaging, but it still seems very harsh. Too much bass guitar. Vocals getting killed.

ssobeich:
Guitars sound good to me. The vocals are a mess. The first five words blow my face off, then the vocals fall way into the mix. Bass too out front, rhythm guitars too far back, snare too boxy, kick too woofy. Tighten it up, and what the hell happened with the vocals? Seems like you got some weird automation going on with the vocals and guitars.

Turkeyoverlord:
I'm sorry bro but this is unlistenable. Way way way too hot and smashed and harsh.

VasDim:
Not too bad. The snare seems a little too roomy and sounds out of place compared to the rest of the mix. The whole kit is a little too roomy actually. But the levels are all mostly pretty decent. Overheads could come up considerably. Guitars are a little too bright and sizzly, but this one's not too bad.

And the winner is...................................

guitarplayr82. :thumbs up::thumbs up:

Congrats dude! You won! I think your mix was pretty much hands-down the best. Well done. Please PM me your address and I'll send you two CDs.

Thanks everyone for playing along. :)

Feel free to discuss my findings, ask me questions, yell at me, tell me to fuck off, or whatever else you wanna do.
