Greg, would you do us a big favor and post your notes when you are done so that we can see where our mixes did well or needed improvement?
Sure........The results are in!
Here's my notes in no particular order.
DVincent
Pros: Overall levels pretty good. I can mostly hear everything.
Cons: Mix has a weird mid-scooped sound to it. Bottom end is kind of
muddy, and the highs are a little sizzly. The delay on the saxes is
strange and distracting.
Trumpino
Pros: Good mix overall. Everything is there. Guitars and bass sound good.
Cons: Vocals and backing vocals a little low. Tambourine a little overpowering.
Panning it to the other side would give the Ride cymbal more room.
LemonTree
Pros: Nice big guitar presence. Nice bass sound.
Cons: Drums are too low. The big guitars and bass are beating up on
the drums. Vocals a little too loud. Sax and keys almost non-existant.
Zero00
Pros: Good guitar presence. Vocals sit well. I don't know that the delay
on the vox really works, but I kinda liked it. Saxes and piano sit well.
Cons: A bunch of problems. The mix is harsh and midrangey. Bass is MIA.
The drums sound mega compressed and lack power in the mix.
Fishmed
Pros: Pretty good balance overall. Everything is there and present.
Guitars and bass sound good. Vocals sound good and sit well.
Full sounding mix
Cons: Did you sample replace the drums? That doesn't sound like my kick or
snare. Lol. Too much reverb on the kit, I think. It's not in the same
space as the rest. Not enough overhead tracks. Overall a pleasing mix though.
AMcB
Pros: Pretty good mix overall. Vocals sound great. I like the fat drum sound. A clear favorite.
Cons: The kick is a little overpowering. Saxes and piano could
come up some. The accent rhythm guitar is too low. An ear pleasing mix overall though.
PoeticIntensity
Pros: Vocals sound great. Leads and accent rhythms
sit perfectly.
Cons: The highs are harsh and the bass is boomy. The overheads are too sizzly
and the kick is too clicky. Rhythm guitars and snare getting lost at times.
I think it's just a little overcooked.
guitar zero
Pros: Overall balance pretty good. Everything is present and accounted for.
Cons: What the hell happened to the kick? It's like random kick hits are missing.
The mix of the tracks is pretty good, but this mix is the opposite of PoeticIntensity's
in that it doesn't seem to have enough done to it. it's a little flat.
Squibble
Pros: Nice guitar and bass presence. Vocals sound pretty good. Good piano presence.
Cons: Accent guitar and saxes too low. Overheads sound kind of trashy. Close mic'd drums too low.
I don't think you got the tambourine lined up properly. It's off.
KingofPain
Pros: Nice full mix. No holes anywhere. It's like a wall of sound. I like that.
Cons: Snare is a little light. Accent guitar is MIA. A little more bass gtr would be good.
Vocals a little too sibilant. Not crazy about the intro guitar and backing vox panning,
but it's not too bad.
Vomithatsteve
Pros: Good use of everything. Nothing is missing. The drums are really raw, but I kind of like em like
that on this song.
Cons: Bass gtr is muddy and too loud. It might not be bad if it were just lower
in the mix. Leads are rip your face off loud. Lol. Vocals are a little strong in the high mids.
Vomithatsteve crazy mix
Lol
Steenamaroo
Pros: You added backing vox? I hear something harmonizing in the chorus. If so, nice touch. Vocals
sound great. Drums have good presence.
Cons: Sounds harsh and overprocessed. Guitars sound kind of thin and boxy. saxes a little low.
BullsHit
Pros: Huge guitar sound in the intro. I like the cut-out before the solo. The phasey sound
before the "Wham "Bam" and ending sounds cool. The big ending sounds awesome.
Cons: I'm not crazy about the weirdness going on with the vocals and stuff, but I know that's your style
so it's all good.
Tim Kroeger
Pros: Guitars and bass sound great. Drum presence is perfect. Overall balance good.
Cons: Not much to nitpick musically. I'd like the doubled vocals more centered and sitting in the mix more. More
sax and piano would be good. I think in a car or on a home system where the hard panned vocals would be less noticeable, this mix would be really good.
Disasster
Pros: Good guitars, sax, and vocals. Big sounding mix.
Cons: Bass a little muddy. Piano a little light. Drums too buried.
Simman_6
Pros: Good use of everything. It's all there but.....
cons: Mix sounds squashed and centered. Not enough space/panning.
ChibiNappa
Pros: Big guitars and drums. Leads sound great. Bass level sits nicely. Authentic backing vox panning.
Cons: A lot of low-mid mud. A scoop in the 125-250 range cleaned it up a lot.
Jason Bird
Pros: I'm sorry bud, but there's not much good going on with this one. Leads and intro guitar sound okay.
Vocals sound pretty good.
Cons: The mix is really rough and centered. Not enough panning and space. Sizzly, overhead-heavy drum submix.
It's just a crush of noise in the middle. 106 kbps doesn't help.
This one was really tough. I went back and forth on a lot of things. I'm pretty sure I got the winner and overall top 5 right. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 changed orders several times. I eventually took off the "producer hat", put all the technical mixing aspects aside, and I just went back to good ol listenability as if I was just some regular dude listening just for the fun of it.
And the winner is........
FISHMED!
Congrats dude.
PM me your name and address and I'll mail you a CD as soon as I get them.
The Top 5:
#1 Fishmed
#2 Tim Kroeger
#3 AMcB
#4 Trumpino
