Okay... I figured it'd be a good idea to listen to the original Bowie song, and no disrespect to Bowie, but Greg's blows his out of the park. I guess I just don't understand the appeal of Bowie.. I've never liked his stuff. So.. Good jorb, Gerg. :p

if it's no trouble to ya greg, i've updated my mix a little bit.

same link.

I finally listened as well. And I agree! Well the free sample on iTunes anyway

I liked him in "Labyrinth", but that was about it.

Lol. Thanks. You gotta keep Bowie in context. I'm not a super-fan, but some of his stuff was way weird and cool for the time. This song here is my favorite of his because it's just good ol simple rock and roll and not super weird or trippy. Remember, back then, music pretty much sucked huge amounts of ass. There were very few bands playing cool, dangerous, non-wanky rock and roll. Most of that era's heavy hitters were gearing up to become lame arena rock bands or shitty sterile prog crap. Bowie was a forefather of glam, which helped to spawn punk and garage rock - which is infinitely cooler than shit like Yes and ELP.

try "The Width of a Circle" on The Man Who Sold the World...brilliant rock song, a pretty much unknown classic (I love the guitar tone on it)

and agreed, suits the Gs style down to a tee :)

That, my friend, was AWESOME! Wow. Huge eye opener as far as how different mixes can sound back-to-back. Thanks for doing it!

Very cool, and I enjoyed the listen. However the comparisons are mostly pointless without matching RMS levels as closely as possible. In blind A/B testing, it's well documented that people gravitate to the louder ones as sounding better. This would be really cool if you put an RMS level meter on, and volume matched the samples.

no sweat PI. glad you enjoyed it.

i'm decorating today, so it was either literally watch paint dry, or do something else :laughings:

guitarzero,
i had thought about levelling them out, but then i thought it would sort of defeat the purpose.

idk if you guys noticed, but the mixes that are most compressed, and obviously sound compressed, are the quietest ones?

where as the ones that sound natural, and have good dynamic range are the loudest.

i thought that was worth leaving alone so it'd be noticed.

but yeh,Wow,,,what a range of mixing styles in here!

**edit, not the most mathematical thing in the world, but try this. should be close enough not to be influential.

Yeah, still without matching levels you're comparing apples to oranges. Matching levels won't do anything to the compression characteristics of each mix. You'll still be able to hear the different styles, but they won't sound so drastically different.

i've matched the levels now. it's in the quote!

but yeh, the point was to compare apples to oranges. everyones mix style is different, including their final levels.

i just thought it was all worth observing, as is.

That sir - was awesome - i wish I had time to do a remix but i'm moving this week - if It's still in the radar next week I will give it a shot.

That was really cool the way you mixed the mixes ;)

Okay well I've got a pile of mixes to listen to now, so if anyone else wants in, hurry up. Deadline is this weekend. I'm judging next week.

I will be posting an updated mix.

I have to fix the few guitar riffs with to much verb...hope to post by the deadline.

Okay, for those of you submitting multiple mixes, that's cool, but I'm gonna "judge" your latest entry. I figure if you're updating, you're making it better, right? So that's the one I'm gonna judge.

Alright, after this I will torment Greg no longer. Here is the last one from me. :D

This has been great for acclimating myself to my new mixing board.
