1st & Foremost I'd like to say Hi to all. I am new here as of this Posting although I have come here on occasions to read a few entries most recently as recommended by a few friends. What I've discovered is, there are many of you who know tons about Technique more than willing to share yur knowledge without criticism and a few who tend to be a tad harsh on what they deem is a dumb question. However for the most part, almost all seem to be more than willing to provide insight of their experience and I more than appreciate that because there's a wealth of knowledge here that many people spend thousands learning in school. So for those who come here with little appreciation for the knowledge being offered and running off never to be heard of again until you have your next problem, I feel you probably don't understand how incredible this learning Forum is. You absolutely must give back whenever you can, which is what I fully intend to do ... I've been a Professional Composer & Performer for more years than I can account. In the past year, I purchased Cubase SX3 and for the first time, am being forced in becoming a Recording Engineer. WOW ! All I can say is, if I never had appreciation for Sound Engineers before, I certainly do now. I never realized how scientific it was just to get the quality of what we hear on the Radio. I bow down to those who understand this and offer your tips & suggestions to others.

I have a question about Shock Mounts for Mics. What's the purpose basically? I'm recording Acoustic Guitar attached to a boom stand, which doesn't get bumped or moved. When is it necesssary to apply a Shock Mount for your Mics? Or is it necessary at all other than it simply looks cool?

Anyway, thanks and I hope the information I provide on this Forum will help a few people move forward.

Shock mounts help isolate the microphone from vibrations. Tapping your foot, cars driving by, the refrigerator motor from the other room, etc. all send subsonic vibrations through the floor that might be picked up by the mic. A well-designed shock mount will minimize the amount of those vibrations reaching the microphone.

What he said..... :)

Different mics have diferent degrees of capsule isolation. Counting on the mic's capsule isolation is a bad idea in all circumstances, and disasterous in some cases. Some shockmounts are very overpriced, but there's usually affordable alternatives to fit most any mic. It's a small price to pay to not have the golden take ruined for want of a shockmount.

Hmmm Very Interesting ... As for them being expensive, yep that's what I'm finding. I just purchased an AT3035 on ebay for a super price. No extras included. However there was for a little bit more, another auction for a Condensor Mic complete with Boom Stand and Shock Mount included. Only problem is, the Mic was crap so I suppose what you were probably bidding on more than anything, was the Shock Mount & Boom Stand and he was going to throw the Mic in.

Lowest Price I found for a Shock Mount to fit the Audio Technica AT3035 is $69.95. Which is just a little less than what I paid for the Mic on Ebay. But from what you guys are telling me, it is obviously worth it. Although it does take away a little joy from the awesome deal I got on the Mic.

Thanks Gang, this is what I needed to know

It looks like this one will fit it. Mount for $13.95+

I looked in the owners manual for the AT3035 and it says it is 2" in diameter. The description for this mount says it fits 2" mics.

There you go!

Don't get that thing  Looks like a typical Chinese shock mount thats designed like crap. Nothing wrong with Chinese mics-just to be fair.
I have one just like that , that came with a Cascade bal bal bla fro free when I pruchased another product (Bay View Pro Audio).

Worthless piece of garbagio. Don't spend money on it. (not to mention the shipping fees).

But I suppose if you're desperate and have not clip at all, it may be useful.

rant over.

BTW, I know it's been awhile since this was posted but I did buy that mount and it didn't last. As soon as I started tightening the wing-screw, it snapped.
