"Greening" a CD...fact or fiction??

Just curious...again... exactly which GREEN should I be using? And what is the thickness to be applied? Perhaps even the chemical composition of the marker dye ( sp3 hybridized carbon allyels???), SEEMS this SHOULD have a bearing on such a recordable medium as say.... a CD.

simple...

bright green for brighter tone

dark green for , yes, darker tone.

mix the green with red for more agressive , biting tone...

..... now that's about the weed, what about this cd thing everyone is talkin' about..... AH who cares.. now about the weed....

AND who the hell said the GRASS isn't greener on the other side (of the Atlantic that is )!!!!

I think 2morrow my junior member will become a senior member.

yeah always thought that kindof crap was nonsense but i guess he grass on the other side is better!!! (wouldn't know about greener though...) but only if you live in the usa and neighborhood...

Man am i happy to live in the Netherlands for ONCE. everything costs more here

EXCEPT FOR THA WEED. HOORAY!!!

Macs are better

Since all discussions on this forum eventually turn into a PC vs. Mac war, let me add that Audio CDs sound better played on a Mac vs PC. ;)

Verifiable Quantifiable Difference

I have discovered the prefect THREAD

This was after a lot of research and study,
and you guys, don't jump on me for this, because many of you were helpful in my research.

the perfect THREAD, as defined by CyanJaguar, from his observations,

Is a thread that has a ratio of 1:10
.
.
.
.
.
.......
i.e aproxiamtely one reply for every ten views.

This thread is a perfect thread, so is the "God is dead" thread in the dragoncave, and many others that have come before them :)

seroiusly though, who can tell me where to get some 12 awg speaker wire. Right now I am using 16 awg, which is not the best.

We all have to take what NLaston said about the greening technique into consideration.

funny thing is...

...I agree with about every post in this thread. I would like to add that green bottled green BUD beer is THE BEST. Has anyone had it? Seriously. I have. It's GOOD and it WILL improve all you hear...;) You here???

I also think we need to agree that ALL posts on this board are OPINIONS. Some are much more highly educated opinions than others - but opinions are what DRIVES THIS BOARD.

I also realize most of the banter on this board is connected to those opinions. This - my friends - is the good news. Although opinions on this board may be trashed - this is all which is being trashed. I've been on other boards where personal perspective becomes PERSONAL attacks. I don't see that happening here - and this is good.

I RELY on the fact that if I say something "questionable" you all will crucify me for my OPINION. This is how I learn. Jus' don talk about my momma.... ;)

I'm not a pro Audiophile - I'm not a pro Studio Engineer...but I'm sure I can learn a hellova lot hanging around and asking questions... hear...???

Peace..... zip >>

...and Cyanman...

I kinda noticed the 10:1 ratio. I thought I was dreaming it. Maybe it was the green bottled green bud beer...???...

What follows will most likely start another debate.

This is not my intention.

CYANJAGUAR,

If you are looking for speaker cable what you need to do is:

1) Forget about the thickness aspect.
Thicker is not necessarily better.

2) Find a local HIGH END STEREO STORE. (Not the wiz or equivalent)
Go inside, tell them you would like to BORROW speaker cable.
If they do not LEND out cable... LEAVE IMMEDIATELY
Other wise
They will ask you... What kind are you interested in?
Tell them what you need it for
The maximum you would like to spend.
How long you need it. (The shorter the better)

3) They will ask you for a Credit Card.
This is to insure that you will not steal the cables.
Take them home and listen.

4) After a couple of days.
Bring them back.
Ask if you can BORROW another set which is of a DIFFERENT brand.

5) Have a great time.
Let me know how you did.

SMELLYFUZZ...

Good idea. Do you know if other "music" stores like Mars will do the same for Mic cables?

I need a 50 foot section and am torn between something like Whirlwind and Monster. I'd like to see if there is a difference myself before I shell out the extra cash.

Can you explain to me how a CD actually works? I mean the mechanical process. Also, can you explain what the error correction algorythym actually does? Answer carefully.

I've been thinking about it and although my first reaction was that 'Greening' was Bullshit, I realised that I don't know the very specific details of How a CD is read and error corrected. So something occurred to me....It MIGHT be possible that coloring the edge of a CD stops light from entering from the side of the CD, where it MIGHT refract and reflect between the two outer surfaces and cause some kinda comb filtering of the read laser, or other errors. If this is the case then the darker the marker the better, the color would be irrelevant. :D

If anyone believes in the "Green Marker" you are on the wrong planet!!!!

guhlenn: I'd sure appreciate some of those amazing seeds! A friend of mine participated in a "taste test" in your fine country a while back and the story has been immortalized at:

To my knowledge no other type of stores lend out cables.

However, HI END STORES always stock XLR cables

that do work & improve the sound of a mic.

Beware that XLR (balanced) cables are often VERY EXPENSIVE

and are sold by the pair only. The price starts at about $100.00

for a 1 meter (3 foot) pair.

VOX

The green on the marker is opaque and you are right the color of the

marker matters not. I sometimes use black rubber Compact Disk

rings that hug the edge of the CD which does (in my opinion) change

the sound.

You are also correct in the way the marker claims to work.

The laser can be reflected by the edge of the CD which shoots the

light all over the inside of your player. This causes a tracking loss

that deteriorates the sound. How bad does it hurt the sound ?

Just enough for the people in Audiophile land to want to fix it.

CATER

HAVE YOU GIVEN IT A TRY OR DO YOU KNOW BY
SKEPTICISM ONLY ?

$100 a meter?!?

No thanks man....

Maybe if recording my voice was my living... but....

thanks for the info, smellyfuzz.
unfortunately, there is not an audiophile store 100(make that 150) miles from here.

What I did, though, was to bi-wire, which is a thing I picked up after searching some audiophile threads.

I guess that 2 16 gauge wires would be equal to at least a 10 awg wire.

Anyhow, the sound actually improved. I heard some flanges on some vocals that were prevoiusly trace, the transients were sharper , and the reverb tails were more obvious.

Unfortunately, the different lengths I used are causing that phenomenon known as "time smearing", which, since my system is not that good, I can't hear.

I tried the greening thing, and my results are:

It might be attributed to mind freaking , but the tony braxton's unbreak my heart sounded better, Andrea bocelli's songs sounded the same, and montell Jordan's "once upon a time remained the same.

peace.

Hey CJ....

Try that "greening" on Britney Spears first CD.... the sound will just blow your mind!!!!!

Also, if you marker up the edges of the CD jacket, it makes her breasts grow on the cover picture..........

:D :D

(Sorry guys, couldn't resist.........)

Time Smearing?

Time Smearing?

Man, someone has filled your head full of so much garbage, I can't wait to hear what you say next. Anyone with an elementary knowledge in electronics knows the length of the cables is irrelevant.

If you really want better sound from your home stereo, try internally wiring your speakers in parallel at 4 Ohm, with reverse-polarity impedance on the tweeters.

Next, instead of speaker cable, use standard coax cable for your speakers, since there is no loss of signal through coax cable due to the shielding effect.

Lastly, go in and get a hearing exam so you know where the weak spots are in your own self, then tweak your graphic eq to boost the ares where your ears need the most help.
