"Greening" a CD...fact or fiction??

The oil on the AC cord prongs makes sense if you happen to live in the middle of a meth lab and HCl is constantly in the air in concentrations that would choke a mere mortal. Prevents build-up of non-conductive crud on the plug.
It's nonsense for everyone else.

what i ment isn't corrosion. when you turn a plug it *can* scratch due to dust can't it? the oil would prevent that not?

i'm not an oil seller nor have i ever tried... LOL

I use a green marker around the edges of my toilet paper roll, too. Makes the wipe feel much warmer.

Of course, closed-minded strictly by-the-book meter-reader engineer types who believe that the differences obvious to audiophiles between cables, amplifiers, use of “tweak” accessories, etc. are hype and illusion will not be interested and need read no further...

We believe that theoretically these measures work primarily through two interrelated mechanisms: by increasing the “time coherence” of the system, and by lowering the noise floor. In this context, to “improve time coherence” means to reduce the delay and smearing of sonic energy of a musical event over some period of time following the event. This “time smearing” phenomenon is inherent in the mechanical and electrical systems used for sound reproduction, and the ear-brain system is very sensitive to it....

We have found a quick and easy method to instantly tell if your system if fairly time coherent and resolved. While playing a CD quickly select Pause, then Play. This resets the transport mechanism serial digital output circuits and on a good system an instant improvement in smoothness, lack of edge and resolution results. Unfortunately, over a period of 5-10 minutes the serial digital timing drifts off, and the sound slowly reacquires the original slight edginess, hardness and muddiness. As your system improves, the sonic changes in this test become more and more pronounced. This technique is not listed in the tweak list because it has to be periodically repeated, doing insult to the musical continuity each time.

CD treatment fluids are attempts to improve laser pickup tracking and serial bit signal discrimination by altering or improving the optical properties of the playback surface.

Most of the CD treatment fluids we have tried are not fully satisfactory. They all certainly change the sound, but often there is some unpleasant sonic side effect such as hardness, edginess, smearing, dullness, etc... Several products do not seem to have any negative sonic effects, but either do not improve the sound much or do really sound good but at the cost of endless mistracking problems. The Auric Illuminator Optical Disk Resolution Enhancement is unique in our experience for the sheer magnitude of the improvement and for the absence of negative trade-offs. The background “grundge” or noise level is greatly decreased, along with a drastic improvement in resolution and clarity without any edginess. Highly recommended.


Of course, these guys will sell you 8 feet of speaker cable for a mere $1000

I tried the greening technique on my tube cables and I don't know how I could even record before. It's so much better now. Also, the "tissue trick" worked great on my NS-10 monitors...

If you paint the woofer over with green ink. Don't use the cheap stuff though
 
Yeah, I heard that helps cancelling out the infrared sound waves that makes the bass sound muddy. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

I am utterly disappointed in myself! I have failed to recognize the significance of these audio "tweaks" over the years...

I have now come to realize I completely WASTED good harded earned money on a set of Thiel Studio monitors when all I REALLY needed was some special CD enhancing goo and a set of well positioned pieces of change outta my pocket to optimize the performance of my system...sheesh!

Oh well. ;)

Why stop at mere green paint - even if it is the good stuff?? Haven't you heard that all the rage is phthalocyanine DYE vs the old school green cyanine stuff??

This is what you paint over top of the woofers!! The near transparency (gold woofers only - silver woofers still have a VERY light green cast) of the dye maximizes the efficiency of the laser >> from the woofer on in!! I mean really - can 100 of the best audio engineers at Mitsui be wrong?!? I think not. Burn Mitsui discs and paint with Mitsui dye....

I find beer in green bottles to be of better quality, more expensive as well.. hmmm coincidence or... the greening variable?

Maybe it IS the green bottle.....hmmmmmmmm.

I can even PROVE TO ANY ONE who enters my living room
how an ordinary brick on my CD player adds to spaciousness
& a slightly tighter bass.

Audiophiles may be full of shit like many MANY of you say...
BUT at least when we go to purchase speakers or a new CD player
we will sit in a proper sound treated room for an hour or so
comparing brand A against Brand B before we even think of
laying down hard earned cash to the local merchant.

Yes, and after making that pain-staking decision, you take home your choice, and then decide "...it sounds all-right, I guess... but think of how much better it'll sound if I trim my CD's with green marker..." ;)

But seriously, no one but the uninitiated walks into a store with only a recommendation and doesn't audition anything. Any serious purchases should be researched - ie, monitors, mics, mic pres.... However, there are some absolutes and givens that have proven themselves over time and experience.... I don't need to A/B anything to know that a 57 against an amp is a classic sound. Studio "givens" were developed over a long period of time, proven thru repeated use.........

"The greening of CDs..." and all the other nonsense tweaks have never been proven to anyone else other than the person employing the tweaks in the first place. ie, if you want to beleive in hearing a difference, you will hear a difference. Totally subjective....

I'll walk into your living room and you'll play back your fav recording with and without a brick -- you'll hear the difference right away and be quite insistent to me about the nature of the difference.... and I guarantee I'll hear no change. Is it my ears? Because you're more golden-eared than I??? Nope... (well you may be, I have no idea! but anyways...) You hear a difference because you WANT to hear one. I hear no difference because I am not under such a bias. You may have heard the quote I used around this forum ("...use your ears to listen, not someone else's opinion...") -- this comes down to the crux... throw away the bias of making the sound what you wish to hear and simply listen to it as is, honestly and critically... in that light, any sonic difference these "tweaks" are supposed to impose fall to pieces!

But anyways, the studio engineer vs. the audiophile war has existed long before this forum existed and will continue to exist in the future.... the people who beleive these tweaks treat them as "religion" and those that don't... well, DON'T!
We still all need to get along... ;)

Well in the sense that appreciate good sound and good sounding equipment, I guess then "yes".... but in the sense of whether or not I have $20000/per channel worth of reproduction gear in my living room, then the answer is "no".... the answer's also "no" if being an audiophile means having to beleive in these ridiculous "tweaks"!
