There once was a note
I'm running Halion1, the sounds are OK, can anyone recommend killer softsynth sounds, with highest bit rates/quality? around 150-250

Do you mean the sound of an actual synthesizer or good VSTis ?

Grim-VSTis , Electro-Dance sounds. What is state of the art in quality? Is it still 16bit? How does that work?

I have Cubase 5 essentials and I was utterly unimpressed with Halion. The actual synth sounds aren't bad in conjunction with other things but the actual instrument sounds kind of remind me of some of those synthesized sounds that used to come on keyboards in the 80s that didn't sound at all like the instrument it was meant to be (you know, like the violin sounding like an engine of a car that won't start).
You could do worse than check out either Sampletank 2 or Sonik synth, both by IK Multimedia. Some good and authentic instruments in there. A few crappy ones too, but one can't have everything........
As for which 'bit', I don't know, I presume 24 but I'm largely ignorant of that side of town.

What I find quite amusing {well, I do now. I didn't always, especially after shelling out cash !} is the way they make it sound like the instruments are so wonderfully authentic. They sound like computer game sounds ! And going back 30 years, I've never liked them !
I guess I'm hard on technology ! :D

I love the crash cymbals that sound like the air brakes on a Mack truck. Even now I havent heard a good synth cymbal. Some guys mix em real low and others are just leaving them out completely.

no its moved on from 16 bit lol

best are

Rob Papens:
Albino
Predator
SubBoomBass

Tone 2:
Gladiator
Firebird

U-he:
ACE
Zebra

LennarDigital:
Sylenth

NI:
Massive
FM8
Absynth 5

They're the ones that are around the best ones for electro/dance at the moment, theres prolly more these are just of the top of my head...but theyre not cheap...Computer Music magazine has cut down versions of synths like Zebra free with their monthly magazine..theres a few freebies out there that are excellent

I have the NI ones but only really use FM8...i have outboard synths and they beat most softsynths that Ive heard hands down...also you need to read up on synthesis or just use loops...presets are pretty obvious to spot, its just as hard to get a good synth tone as it is a guitar one at times

For drum samples the two best Ive heard, who also have freebie samples are

Wave Alchemy and Goldbaby...
