No bitch slamming but rather putting things into normal porportions.

What I was implying that you were every chance reminding Alan that he is a spammer and Dragon should do something about it.
I say lets leave it up to him.

Lets all get off this horse .....

I suppose I am at fault as much as anyone else....but I get a little perturbed when a thread response (such as this one:D ) has nothing to do with the forum topic. You end up reading it, because you scroll down to all the unread posts...or at least I do.

Gidge..you bend over backwards to help the newbies, offer links, and general advice. But, I'd bet your post count would be 1/10th if you 1). stuck to the subject, and 2).actually discussed equipment you have personal experience with, and 3). didn't mention the V67 or Yamaha Pacifica:D

to keep this post on track...I can't believe those prices...I like the "heads up" notification on deals like this. then we all can decide if its still worth it.

I equate deals like this to people who have to buy stuff when it goes on sale...just because it is on sale. If the price is more than 50% of the reason why I am buying it...then i probably don't need it....or really wanted it. I think that idea's clear...and the percentage in the *right* ballpark:) ...actually it should probably be around 5-10% if I am really serious about my recording...or zero percent, I suppose...;)

more specs?

Can anyone find the specs for the AM30 or the AM52? I mean, all of them, self noise, max spl, etc....Are they electret, or externally biased?

1- post count means nothing to me...ill re-register with a different name and start back at zero if that would make you more comfy....

2- id say 75% of my recommendations come from personal experience....if it is something i have no personal experience with, ill say so, and was probably recommended by someone who i really trust.....besides, how would anyone here know what i have experience with anyway......does one just assume Gidge doesnt know shit........

3- this falls under #2...personal experience....i experience these dudes every day........

4- i like women with nice asses....big tits are fun to play with, but after years of abuse they sag and just get in the way.....

5- what do you mean stick to the subject:D

The GT AM62 is one of the mics in the 49-mic demo disc from 3DAudioinc.com, which is as close as I've ever gotten to one, but to my ears on that recording it sounded VERY good, far better than the Neumann M147 or M149 on the same material, for instance (male and female vocalists singing a cappella).

At $400, it's a stone bargain -- just make sure that it comes with the included hard case, power supply, six-pin cable and shockmount. It's a four-pattern mic (omni, cardioid, figure 8, and super-cardioid). An outfit called the music center has been trying to sell them on ebay for the past six weeks for a sale price of $875.

On listening to the two tracks repeatedly, I did notice a subtle change in the quality of sound between octaves on the female vocal, and it was impossible to tell whether it was the microphone or just her singing on that take. Also, the mic or power supply was just a touch woolier than the very best mics tested (like the Manley Gold Reference at $5500, for instance, or the AT 4060), but these quibbles were about the AM62 at a list price of $1499.

If I didn't already own an outstanding tube mic, I'd snap one of these up in a second at $400. What a bargain!

Alan,

I read something on r.a.p that some chinese 6 micron capsule (that they actually ended up using) beat out even Steven Sank's capsules in competing for the Groove Tubes contract. Have you heard anything about this?

Actually, I have not, but it would not surprise me. The key is getting the few companies that actually do make capsules to do them right, with consistency, but even then they are pretty darn good. Good enough to be used in one of the Manley mics. The GT mics which are now distributed by Midiman could be significantly better with just a few changes, then again I think the prices are out of line.

Not that they are horrible by any means, in fact they are pretty good, but for that money, a few added changes and a price reduction would make them a very tough opponent. Please remember, that this opinion is "mine" based on what I know about them, and how much they cost to produce.

I had $400 to spend and had a real tough time deciding whether to get one am 62 or two am 52's. I finally decided that te 52's at $199 each were too tempting to pass up.I had to sell my 414's after getting injured in a car wreck last year and not being able to work. The only condensors I had left was a pair of sm-81's,so the price on these is a real godsend!I don't know how they will compare to my 414's,but they will have to do for awhile.
BTW,Mark, did there happen to be an am-52 on your demo disc? The only GT mic I have ever had any experience with was an am-11 a friend brought out one time, thought it wasn't too bad at all...........

strmkr, I think you're going to find that the 52's are going to be just a little thinner than the 414's. Just a bit. I'd also add you'll get a lot of mileage out of a pair of them.

STRMKR,

Unfortunately, there was not. I had read about the Groove Tube line of tube mics for quite awhile, but I did not know about the AM series, and that mic shoot-out CD was the first time I had heard a recording with one.

The competition was stiff, and my wife and I both did blind listening tests so we wouldn't be affected by brand-name preferences and price. Once we whittled our list down to those mics we really liked, THEN we looked at prices and eliminated those we'd never be able to afford.

Interestingly, though, the AM62, even when I thought it was going to be about $895 or so, remained on my strong list of "mics wanted." It beat out a lot of more expensive mics from famous brands.

I realize that putting together that 49 mic shoot-out took an enormous amount of work by about 10 people, just to assemble the mics in one place and design and execute a reasonably fair trial in which only one of the engineers present knew which was which (!). It's little wonder that Mr. Fuston sells the CD for $50; but it's already saved me 10 times that amount easily.

Nevertheless, I long for Lynn Fuston or someone else to do another well controlled mic shoot-out that includes more of the less expensive condensors and tubed mics that have come out in the last couple of years, along with the trusted classics.

Two of the most satisfying (if completely irrelevant) "discoveries" of rating the 49 x 2 tracks (solo male and female vocalist on each mic) in blind listening tests was discovering that the $80 Shure SM57 sounded musically solid and better than some of the more esoteric mics (all of which were significantly more expensive, of course), and that the "$22,000" Telefunken (the owners of classic mics got to make up whatever they wanted as their current value) sounded like some old piece of crap!

Across the board, perhaps my favorite mic was the AT 4060, and I actually liked all of its cousins as well. But the (now $400) GT AM62, while a little more distinctive in character and perhaps not quite as noiseless, was still right up there with the best of them.

Go figure!

Mark H.

P. S. I expect a full report from you on the pair you got. :-)

Thanks for the replies,guys.

I checked this morning and the lady on the line told me they would ship today.Hurry,Hurry! I just hope this stinking head cold clears up before they get here so I can hear how they really sound.I hate it when I get
stopped up and can't hear things.

Mark, thanks for all the great info and perspective.I like the sm 57 thing.Helps to bring my way of thinking back in line when I get down in the dumps because I can't afford a pair of U87's or something like that.

Track, thanks for the comparison.I didn't get to use the 414's very much before the accident,so maybe I won't miss them so much.

If this sale hangs around long enough,I may just add an am 62 to the old mic locker also.Gotta make some more money AND figure out how to keep the wife from spending it though.

wwell,the ny-quil is kicking in,have a great day!
