I was looking at mic stands, and of course I'll need a cord, I'm planning on getting a shure SM57 for my mic. Do you think this package is worth it just for the cord and stand? I've never seen a boom stand this cheap, throw in the cord and this looks like a deal to me.

Is the cable gonna be crap with this package? Cables do make a sound difference.
These stands are OK. They won't stand up to a ton of abuse, but there's nothing wrong with them for light duty usage. And the mic wire will probably be OK. The mic itself, though, you'll probably want to throw away.

That's what I figured, just get the package for the cord and stand, the mic will probably be useless. Still getting a stand and a wire for under $20 is a deal, considering it would probably be $35 otherwise.

A buddy of mine has one of these, and ditto on the mic...it's a piece of junk. The stand does its job, at least with a sm57, just nothing much heavier. The cable definitely works for live use, but I wouldn't use it for any sort of recording.

i got 10 pack from MF.. $100!

are they cheap? yes.

do they work? yep.

i like 'em. cheap enough so that i was able to use two of them to rig up my kick drum mic!

cheap enough that i was able to fill them up with mics too!

there ok, just done put any LDC's on them.. i had one tip quite a few times.

On-Stage has several varieties of mic stands, and this particular one is a piece of crap. Just try to get it to hold position without over-torquing or using duct tape. Most of the parts are plastic and overall it just isn't up to lots of use. That said, I have some On-Stage stuff that is quite good for the price.

Buy cheap, and buy twice. Save up for something that is at least mostly metal.

Buy a mic that you already know you're not gonna use just to get a deal on a crap stand and so-so cable? Sorry, but that's just stupid reasoning.

Agreed. This one is pretty darn close to the Nady stands that I have, which will barely hold a pencil condenser (Nady CM-90) at full extension (and sag while doing so).

The cheapest mic stand that's worth touching, IMHO, would be the Tama mic stands. They go for about twice what this cheap one costs. They'll hold my Nady ribbon mic (heavier than any LDC I've seen by at least a factor of three or four). In fact, they'll hold a 10" rack tom and a pair of cymbals.

Note the slightly curved Nady stand behind it, sagging under the weight of an SDC. :D

Oh, and yes, I know the cymbal sucks. It's also at a different pitch than my other 16" cymbal, so I keep it around for a different color. I like to have fun with the cymbals, using them in a semi-tonal fashion, going down from high to low in parallel with the keyboard line. :)

BTW, the claimed retail price is pretty off-the-charts ridiculous. I paid about that much for the stand that holds the mic in my piano (VP-88 at full extension). I think it is made by On-Stage Stands (but has no label, as I had to shorten the center pipe a few inches to make it fit in my piano on short stick). It has a tripod base that's 42 inches from the tip of one foot to the tip of another. Now -that- is a mic stand worth $99. :)

Second on the Tama stands, they're a good value. I beat the hell out of mine in about a dozen gigs, no failures. Now they live a quieter life in my studio, still going strong :)

Yeah - me too. They work well if you're really careful with them and don't abuse them. Don't overtighten any part of them and they'll last a few years. I wouldn't recommend using them with large, somewhat heavy mics.

i'd love to get some better stands- they do require considerable playing-with or else they move alot and don't hold position well unless you play with it.

i have an onstage studio boom- $79, nice. a lil wobble at the base because i'm a spaz and can't get the legs even, but a good deal i think. by wobbly, i mean it is like a table with one leg shorter than other- doesnt matter as long as you dont touch it.
