I'm not sure if this will work, please bear with me and my testicle difficulties. I've got a new song mixed down, but I'm so way not into the MP3.com wait I posted at Idrive at this link?..>>>>

file name: Gray Cookies and Doughnuts for the Cat and Giraffe

This is my first official song recorded on my PC. Up until now all of my home recordings have been on 4track portastudios. Its a bit shaky, but I'm open to criticism and advice.

I do want to thank in particular dobro, kelly holdridge, camn, and shailat for the tips and help.:D

Well, it works, Rats... gotta click on the blue down arrow (download), and then "open from this location" twice, then "save" on the third (and final) window...

(There's a jump at 4:41, don't know if that's intentional or not.)

Yeah, I dig the song, it's a great couch song. The biggest obstacle is the drums, obviously. You can probably get by with that hi-hat, but the kick and snare would ideally be different. Try some reverb on the kick, more mid on the snare, maybe bring all of 'em up in the mix... (well, maybe drop the vocals a bit, let the rest come up)

I like the feel of the song, the tone of the guitars (sitar?), S8-N's guest appearance as DJ :D, and the words...

Is that the Windows "Bling"? Guess not, but it sounds JUST like it on occasion...

3:45 - 4:00 is a good sound.... then around 4:20 it gets pretty trippy, also diggable... I love that guitar twang you've got, Rats...

Good song. Maybe drop some reverb on the drums, find a way to sync the guitar, drums, and vocal at the very beginning, lower the vocals a bit (which will allow the background mix to come out, as the they'll come up relative to that good vocal setup you've got, that'll make the "TV" beginning more pronounced), you're set. I can dig it. :D

One other thing... @ 1:08 there's a crash or splash on the TV, kinda takes attention away from the song (fade it out beforehand? dunno)

Shit, one more...

You dig Love&Rockets? That's where your vocals are now, yub.

yeah kelly, it looks like the streaming audio doesn't work there. Well, at least the download works.

Thanks for the kind words. This song is a bit different for me, but I'm pretty excited about the possibilities that are availabale now that I'm not confined to 7 ping-ponged tracks on a 90 miniute Maxell. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah I like Love and Rockets, although I'm not really a fan anymore, I used to be about 5-10 years ago. For their time they were doing some pretty innovative stuff, even more so when they were together as Bauhaus. When the group (-Peter Murphy and David J) broke up and Tones on Tail came out, I think that may have been some of the best music of the legacy. Ever listen to Dali's Car? That was Peter Murphy with the bass player from Japan. It's only available in the US as an import, but if you see it you may want to pick it up! The cover is a Maxfield Parish painting.

About the song: The song one of around eight new songs I've written for my new band the Blue Sunrays. This one is the first I've finished the rough draft for. Now I know some of you don't like to listen to rough drafts, but I would really appreciate it if you would here because I'm new to this caliber of recording, and would like to work out the bugs before I get the rest of the band involved. I'm looking for comments like Kelly's on the mix, the sound, the overall production, etc.:D

The drums can easily be fixed by taking off the small amount of reverb I put on em, Kelly on another I listen I agree you're right.

No sitar, just the strat. Although Satan had stopped by to jam on his fiddle, S8-N had no part in the scratching records, that was me~!

The "bling" was a glass vibes voice on the keyboard. Maybe I should try the windows bling, hmmmm............

The splash you heard is from a fishing show. Yeah I guess I could fade it... does kind of add to the chaos.

Vocals, guitar, drums out of sync in very beginning, yes without a doubt. I'll have to hit that next time around.

My favorite part is the oboe at the end.

One of my big problems is my lack of experience with compression. I used the most subtle compression I could apply over the final mixdown, but it still comes off sounding over compressed at the end of the song (I hate that).

I think I need top back and normalize some of those record scratches too, like the one just before the transition...

Thanks to anyone who takes a listen.

Oh yeah, I guess I ought to be tellin you how twas recorded...

I looped this at work and then at home.
You've got some nice ideas.
I think that a lot of the stuff sounds
like the setup for a part that doesn't come around.
Your lyrics have colors that haven't been named yet!

Get UP on it!
What outputs does that Roland sampler have?

BTW: my Porta-07 never sounded quite that quiet.

Oh, I listened to this tune at work today, but I forgot to comment on it because it took an hour to download (argh idrive!). Anyhow, I think it's got great potential. I liked it very much indeed! There were several Floyd moments in there, reminded me of Goodbye Cruel World.

Good work!

Interesting. I like the freeformness of it, and the talking stuff is great. I love that sort of thing. Sounds good. The kick has a subsonicness to it that gets a bit annoying. Maybe cut some low low end on that. Great title.

Ok, somebody get this song outta my head. Nice hook, shithead.

:D

Wow, thanks peep! I was starting to wonder if it sucked so bad that peepel were afraid t tell me. BTW if anyone listens to it and has something critical or negative to say about it, I LIKE THAT! If you want to tell me it sucks, please do, just tell me why!

doctor: Thanks for listening, I was hoping you would! Dude yer making me blush (teehee)! Gracias on the good words. Yeah the porta07 works pretty good. I'll have to check on the outputs thing, it's got a lot!! I generally just run out mono. A little different than my old stuff would you say?

Slack: man i'm sorry about that download, I didn't realize it would take that long on some puters. Have you had the same problem downloading from diskwise? I haven't tried that yet, but both seemed reasonable when I downloaded at work. Then again I use high speed internet at work.

Potential is a good word. I'm sure the song will change a bit when I bring the other guys in to work out bass, guitar, and drums. This is a ROUGH DRAFT. I'm feeling pretty good about it now. I am looking for the technical critique as well as teh songwriting/ playing, because this is my first full recording on Cool Edit and my PC. I appreciate your comments, as I've been an admirer of your work.

macle: Thanks for the listen and feedback. The kick, huh? Hmm.. all the drums are on one track here cuz there from a machine so I guess I'd have to tweak that. When I listen in my car, the low end is so heavy it hurts! I'm not sure how that happened. My problem is I don't have any decent monitors, just my shitty PC speakers/sub-woofer or the headphones. I can sdee this is going to be a challenge because what sounds great on my PC speakers sounds like total crap in the real world of car audio where music was meant to be heard. Any ideas?!!

Kelly: I feel your pain, brutha. the title hook maybe? I get the ending part without the vocals where the chord progression starts to leave off the last chord of the progression every time around until it's just the original chord with the floating oboe sounds running through it in my head all day. It makes me mad.

Thanks again everyone!

Kelly that skip at 4:41 is not intentional, I'll have to go back and fix that. I think I need to upgrade my version of Music Match Jukebox, it doesn't want to cooperate with me lately.

Can you post this somewhere more reliable.. I got up to 95% and it timed out... damnit.

Doc: the Roland has 8 outputs.

Emeric: sorry bout that! I'm open for suggestions on good places to post MP3s. I have an MP3.com page, but I don't like putting up rough drafts, especially where it takes so long now to get it online.

Waldo from NoWhereRadio sent me a mass distribution letter to NoWhereRadio artists saying that the upload function was back in biz after some downtime to improve the site. Give 'em a try.
Second choice would be the Listenroom.Lycos site. When that works they usually get the stuff up there very quickly.
Same for NoWhereRadio.

Those 8 outputs - are they all analog?

And do they provide output of 8 channels of different samples?

Hey no problem, just get it up there.

Sorry about the coffee cake the other day.. I know it was awful. I thought decaf would work just as well... instant ain't instant anymore. Had a blast though! Rock on!
