Granular synthesis

Granular synthesis is a really interesting concept to me, but I've never actually tried writing melodies with it. I've heard it can help with some unique ideas though. For those of you who use granular synths, do you use them, and what do you typically use them for? Are they mainly texture/sound-design tools for you, or do you actually compose melodies and full parts with them?

You like chopping things into tiny itty-bits? It is subtractive VST synthesis where a sound it digitized into a chain of a bunch of little cubes(i guess). Then in different ways you can subtract cubes from the sound chain. Grains. Granular.

It doesn't have anything to do with synths made before 1990. I don't think.
