If you listen to the audio clip he never got his Fuzz Face to get rid of the hiss. That makes me feel sooooo much better that I am not the only one who couldn't get that damned thing to work. Its got like 15 components but its one of the most difficult things you can build right. The Tone Bender also he says doesn't work (well its a modified FuzzFace so go figure). ;) Its a nice pedal though.

I didn't see the sound clip.

A fuzz is difficult to build (a good one)? I never would have thought that.

The link is at the bottom of the page.

Not just any fuzz, the FuzzFace. The design is so simplistic that is just doesn't like to work. Now as for sounding good, there are stories or famous musicians stockpiling every original FuzzFace they could find that sounded good. Just like playing a bunch of cheap guitars with shotty quality control to find the one good one. I want to say it was Eric Johnson, but I could be wrong.

I would suspect that is the reason Jimi had his FuzzFace modded. He probably like the overall sound, but realized something wasn't right.

After building a FuzzFace I actually felt like Fulltones '69 was money well spent.

I heard the story about guitarists going thru piles of fuzzes............I heard it was due to inconistencies in the transistors.

I listened to the clip. Sounds like a big o box of noisy fun. :D

;)

Germanium is funny like that.

Its also the fact that the simplistic design leaves out a lot of noise control that could have been integrated into the circuit, but isn't because it still alters the tone a bit. I should say, the "original" FuzzFace is what is hard to get right. The modern version with mucho fuzz I have not built, but it incorporates much more modern design.
