Wow they do look compact. When it says "They are available to use for guitar, ukulele, or other stringed instruments that have string tension of less than 20kgs. (44 lbs.)", could you, for the sake of reference, expound upon the string tension of, for instance, a dreadnought acoustic strung with .12s?

Probably around half that for a typical string. You can use this handy little bit of software to calculate the values in lb's for any string combination.
The reason they quote that is because that is the theoretical point at which the gear would fail. In practice the string would fail way before that which is why strings do not slip on the post.

I'm not sure when I'm going to have time to fit them to anything worthy but you can find some more very good images in the Hosco brochure. Hosco are the guys I deal with and they basically make or commission all the Gotoh and Wilkinson stuff as well as much of the branded fittings out there. Their pdf brochures are worth downloading if only for the dimensions and layouts. Google "hosco guitar products".

What advantages do they offer? I'd imagine they're awesome on anything that's a bit neck-heavy, but anything else?

So...how is this better?....in reality the smaller they are the more likely they wont cover the footprint of the old tuners and look kinda weird...as if they didnt look kinda weird already...if you had a brand new neck it might look kinda cool.

Hrd to say but the immediate applications that spring to mind with me are that you can reduce the headstock size quite considerably. I have a job on the drawing board at the moment where that is a consideration. Also good for 7 string, 12 string, multi string applications. There is also the option to face mount them doing away with the need for post holes.
Like I said I'm going to get them in my hands and have a good look at them. I just thought some of you guys might like to see what the future may hold for fittings. Especially when something useful may at last be in the mix.

Who said they were better?
They are not designed to go on existing headstocks although that would be possible. My interest in them are as a guitar builder.

To my knowledge no. That is if you mean three on a plate. One of the interesting things about them is that they have used some very modern metallurgy and plating techniques to greatly increase the performance of the worm gear and pinion. That's why they can make them smaller without failing. An upshot of that is that they intend to offer them with options for longer or shorter posts to accommodate different headstock types. With longer posts there is every chance you could rig them up on a slotted headstock. I'd have to see the final product though to be sure. I don't think there would be a market to launch a slotted headstock set but the possibility is an intriguing one I agree
By a strange coincidence I'm going out there on a jolly soon as I was involved in some of the pre production design. I'm there in about three weeks I'll ask them..
