Thanks dres for pointing that out.

We'd still have the issue of an amateur recordist combined with ATRAC
data compression from the minidisc multitrack recorder which would
skew the results though. Then add the minidisc 2 track recorder used
to practice mixes...well, you get the idea!

Alan knows I was able to detect the use of Joe Meek equipment from listening to a Mellencamp single on the radio

Sorry to take the conversation in another direction, but what single was that? Just curious. :D It sounds like you've had some good experiences with the vtb1, I'm interested in hearing more opinions and look forward to the reviews. Thanks for posting your opinions.

chessrock, the title was something like "A Beautiful World" or
"A Peaceful World"-it was on a station that didn't say the title.
Unbeknownst to me, Alan had set up the Meek units for John's
sessions! At around 8 years old, my hearing was tested and it
was 22KHz+. Factoring the aging process's effect on hearing,
which is typically about 1KHz loss per decade after about 20
years of age, I'm probably still above 19 KHz in each ear-
good thing I wore those earplugs to loud rock concerts.
The "Meek" compression effect sounds like a combination of increased
thickness and punch to the vocal tone in a certain relation to one
another, so that can be a tipoff as to the possibility of it in the signal
chain.

Well, based on that formula, I figure my hearing is coming in at about 15k after years of playing loud guitar with cymbal smashing drummer and cranking studio headphones for years! Maybe its even lower than that!

12 KHz or greater is O.K. for a singer as the vast majority of a voice's
"body' and overtones are contained up to that point IMHO.
There are some powerful basses in my workshop who are over 70,
and have excellent relative and/or perfect pitch.

The flipside is that the sensitivity to volume levels seems to increase with
age, which can help to increase a vocalist's skill with dynamics.

There's definitely a certain lazy, relaxed patience to Joemeek compression. It's kind of like the photo-optic light is saying: "I'll get around to taking the signal down when I get to it . . . and I'll bring it back up gently and at my leasure."

And it kinda' laughs at you if you tell it how it should operate. If you set the controls to a certain attack/release time, it will tell you: "Yea, I'll try to get it close."

It's kind of a lazy comp. And as midwestern as John M. is, his tunes have a certain southern feel to them, so I think it kinda' reflects the less-urgent southern attitude.

That's why I think people like to say it has "personality." I dare anyone to come up with a better analogy for the optical comp. :)

Very interestinhg cultural study. In stark contrast to a certain german company that starts with the letter M that makes channel strips that are very precise and do exactly what you tell them to do.

:D :D :D :D

Correction: In time, you do exactly what they tell you to do. Mind control, Jusum.

Don'T vorry, ve know how to make you speaK, hahahahahaHAA! ;)

I actually live pretty close to the Mindprint guys (more or less the audio department of Hughes & Kettner). I almost applied for a job there. Maybe I should have done that so I could afford their stuff, right now. Still stuck with Behringer...
