Unfortunately, I won't have time to mess around with it until
tommorow night (or sooner?).

However...
It seems to be very well built.
Wouldn't be surprised if the only things left after a nuclear halocaust would be;

1) Cockroachs
2) Keith Richards
3) VTB-1

That sounds like a jeopardy question?
Answer is: Cockroachs, Keith Richards, VTB-1

Question is: What is left after a nuclear halocaust !!!!!!

Well me to Chris, I am anxious to get your opinion, but play with it first. Spend some time with the input gain at unity, which is right before 25, then at 30 and 40 and more. It offers more character with more heat up front, but it is more neutral at unity.

Anyway, have fun!

Thanks Alan, will do.
The XLR out is a simple idea yet profound BTW.

Things for Chessparov to do today:

1. Stay home from work
2. Try every mic in collection with the VTB1
3. Carefully document placement and sound source
4. post results on homerec.com
5. share valuable hands on insight

I dont comprehend what "I won't have time to mess around with it until tommorow night" means --given that so many have been anticipating this pre for months.

:D :D

Agreed. Chessparav, we have called your employer and informed them that you have come down with a 24 hour case of the West Nile Virus. You may proceed with the testing.

You are lucky dude, according to my rep I cannot buy one even if I make the 350 mile trip to the remote location, I have to pay a large markup to a middleman. Even then I wont even see one for another couple of weeks. He still has to find a middleman

Hey Alan, are you upset w/ me because I don't own any SP stuff (yet)?
Just kidding.

Hey Chess... let us know your impressions!
It looks like this VTB-1 could become a very popular pre. But I'm going to wait to see what happens with Toft Audio and other SP pre-amps. I'm looking at T-3 and C-3 mics along the way.

Looks like I will be going a bit over-budget for 2002 on gear. Thanks Alan, my wife will be hunting you down.

Bowisc,

No, I am not upset. I knew all along that we can't please everyone. I have no problem with it....     :D :D :D :D :D :D

Alan,

Like I said, I'm waiting on Toft Audio and your future pre-amps. I KNOW things are going to be awesome for SP's future at the rate you're going.

Well... I got my VTP-1 today... (along with some Studiophile SP-8B Near Fields).. I'm like a kid on Christmas... :D :D :D

I also happened to get a DMP3 along with it... so I'll be doing some A/B testing and posting the results...

Very much interested in your comparison as I picked up the DMP3 and was wondering how it stacks up against the VTP-1. Also have the Studiophiles, they are really great.

Hey WATYF - what you do - rob a bank ? or is the credit card now bleeding ? ;) Seems like only a couple of weeks since you started the longest thread I've ever seen on what the absolute cheapest mic pre to get was.... now you got a couple of joemeeks ... a DMP3, monitors and a VTP-1 !! (yes I'm counting) What does your pastor think about all this materialistic splurge ? Or is he funding you ?! :D Be warned ... you *never* have enough gear !

Still I think your a good songwriter so I expect to hear some hot stuff soon ! ;)

Well actually.. it's my cake desk job that allows me to spend so much on gear...

and yes... I have bought aboot 6 joemeeks so far... (MQ3's) But that's only cause I'm selling em for profit... (muuahahahahaaa) I hated the sound of the first one I bought and decided to sell it on eBay.. it ends up that I make a pretty darn good return by doing that... so I ordered a few more just for the purpose of selling... and now I can use the profits from those sales.......

to buy more gear!!!!

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Things I want to know:

1. How's the new pre, already?!?!

2. What is the Toft Audio thing?

3. What is the average street price of the VTB-1?

;)

WATYF: Ahh, so trading's your game ? Making good use of the screwup with guitar centre's computer price list before they wake up ?! Excellent idea ! Divine intervention perhaps ? ;)

Back to the main topic.....

Please excuse my fashionably late return!

Had some time to screw around-I mean creatively experiment with the
VTB-1 with my Sennheiser 421 MKII. As you may know, the new 421 is
brighter sounding than all previous 421's. Anyway...

Dude this thing rocks! (or if you prefer the wannabee reviewer route)
In comparison with my vintage Neve pre, both going into my SSL console,
the VTB-1 sounded comparable at both -10db and +4 db levels.
Pass the Grey Poupon please.

Back to reality. Signal chain was;
421>VTB-1>Behringer 802A (set at +4 balanced/totally "flat")>AKG 240 DF headphones
linked by XLR cables

In solid state mode it sounds super clean and extremely detailed.
It seemed to "open" up the tone on the microphone.
Adding the "tube tone" made it possible to get different useful tones out of the 421.
Very quiet BTW.

Forgetting the "price issue" for a moment, this is just an excellent professional level
mic pre on a dynamic microphone IMHO.
Should have time tommorow evening to try out the phantom power for condensers.
So far so (very) good!

Chris

Damn, wait 'til tomorrow? ...P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E...Wait, it's almost tomorrow....:)

Another thing,

How crazy can you run that tube? Does it push into distortion?

Push up the input gain, plug a guitar or bass into the front D.I. jack and you have a distortion box...tons of filth!!! SOunds horrible on vocal with all that distortion, but its there if you want it.
