Got any experience with an AMPEX AG440?

Recently saw one in a second hand shop going for $200 Cdn
It is a mono tape recoreder and suposedly can take 1/4 or 1/2 inch tape at 7.5 or 15 ips. Looks pretty cool. Gota go back and actualy see if it works. If I were to get it what would i need to know to maintain it, having never owned something like this before?

The ones in your picture are 1/2 inch, 4 track machines and are the same or very similar to the ones used to record the Beatles, Sgt. Pepper album from back in 1967.

If your machine is the mono, 1/4 inch version, that one dates back to the mid fifties and won't be of much use to you for any modern work you may want to record.

A machine can be either 1/4" or 1/2 " but, it cant be both.

Do more research. Maybe take a digital camera with you to the shop on Church street and post the picture back here so we can see what you are actually talking about.

It looks exactly like the one on the left except it is mono. So you say these are only 1/2 inch eh? Well the people at the store are useles when it comes to acurate information. Got any good links for more info?
