Do any of you use a high pass filter while mixing, or just let the bass "boom"? I was just wondering. I know that different kicks and bass require lower or higher cutoffs. There is no real "rule of thumb" when doing this with rap/hip hop, but I myself use good EQ and compression on my bass with around a 40-60hz filter on the entire mix, depending on the type of rap. To me, seems like anything below that is just moving air. Just asking around, later-

i use a multiband compressor on kicks and i use an eq cutoff on sub bass

i usually cross around 80hz, everything below 80hz on the kick gets ran thru a heavy compressor and everything above 80hz on sub bass duty gets eq'd

i have a pair of krk rockit 5s i use for mixing, and a pair of re audio xxx 15s on sub bass. I usually turn the subwoofers off when i mix then when i get to the mastering aspect i kick on the boomers and adjust accordingly.

hope this helps some, or possibly gives you an idea

also, before i finish my master i isolate the spectrum range one at a time

first i listen to only bass (80hz high cut)
second i listen to only mids (80hz low cut, 5khz high cut)
last i listen to only highs (5k low cut)

it helps me to find a sound that sticks out more that way i can eq that individual sound to blend better before i throgh eq on the complete mix

i then apply my multiband compressor and go from there
