Hiyas.

This is one of the six songs I've been recording with one of my bands in order to get comfortable with my 1604, my ADATs, my 266XL's and so on. I haven't had any separate room for monitoring the recording. It's been done like this:
1. place mics how I use to place them when I do live-jobs.
2. Set the levels
3. Record
4. Listen
5. Adjust if necessary

And since this wasn't originally supposed to become a demo, I spent no time what-so-ever on mic placement.

Drums, Guitar and Bass was recorded simultaneously. No effort put to separate them from eachother.

- Drums are overhead-miced with two, somewhat old, ATM11's, electret condensers, and a Rode NT-3 for the kick.
- Guitar and Bass with SM57
- Accordion with Rode NT-3
- Everything else: Rode NT-1

Everything except the overheads has been recorded with a slight compression. Just so I eventually will get the hang of it.

There are still some percussion to be recorded, but I spent 5 minutes to make a raw mix just so I can get your highly appreciated advice before I start the job with the final mixdown.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hey, slick sound for a raw mix........kinda gypsy semi-thrash wack......that beat was old world hypnotic......I liked it....gibs

Love the reverb effects you got here, heavy right stuff. Your guitars almost sound like horn parts in certain sections. Drums need some balancing. Kick could come up a bit. Bass is cool. Some of the cymbal crashes are loud. At 00:34, you start this alternating thing with the percussion. I can't identify the first instrument. It sounds like a 'click click' and then the snare follows with the same pattern. The first instrument whatever it may (is it a drum machine sample?) be I find distracting, sounds like clipping. I think what you have now is very close to the way it should sound, in my perception. Not really my cup of tea, but you keep it interesting start to finish. Good stuff.

cool...kind of tim burton meets oingo boingo meets rabbi goldberg...

what is that bell sound that sounds like someone mining with a hammer?

definitely movie soundtrack material..

keep it up!

Very nice,

To say that was different, would be an injustice.

That was way out. The singer was great, nice overall mix.

Reminded me of something Danny Elfman might do for a movie. Great work!!

Thanks for listening folks!
When people ask what kind of music we play, I use to say that we play Experimental Rock with ethno influences...

Gibs: Yeah.. I searched for that gerne on mp3.com, but couldn't find it.. ;)

Emeric: The reverb-fx is the guitar. We recorded it with loads of reverb on the amp. Sound almost like horns... yeah.. when I think about it... The rythm that goes: x-2-3-4, x-2-3-*ding* Is a guy equiped with a metal-stick and a hammer playing on a corroded 25 litres can, and the *ding* comes from beating with the hammer on a large metal-ring. The somewhat odd cymbal-sound is a crash and a splash fit tight together with a hihat-mount. Oh.. it's me playing the bass :)

drdrew: read above for description of the mining sound. Nice description :)

GT: I take "way out" as a compliment, as I'm sure the rest of the band does :)

Thanx for listening. I'll soon have new material up.

That is definately different.
The recording sounds really clean. I really like it. Cant wait to hear more from the shuggah shack.

Haha! Holy crap this is cool!

I'm absolutely speechless...I can't even comment. This was totally unexpected.

Ok, I'll try...the mix sounds...unique! The song is...unique in a rub my magic lamp kinda way. I love it.

Kinda klezmer. Really cool. You gotta do something about that house reverb, though. It's doing nothing for the intelligibility of the lyrics, for example (none of which I can understand, despite my best earnest efforts so to do).

This is a really good song. What are you doing hiding out in the woods?

If you want to hear interesting stuff related to your track, email me.

p.s. It ends too abruptly, too! :D

Hey Mesh........

Very nice.... very cool... it kinda reminds me Frank Zappa, witha different vocalist....

This is one of those times the coolness factor outweighs the mix -- I was so intrigued by the tune, the mix kinda flew by me... (or maybe I'm just in a good mood!!!) ;)

Good one!!

hey hey hey

Man, it's nice with all this possitive feedback. Thanks a bunch for listening.

ametth, H2H, S2K, Bruce, Dobro: It's that kind of feedback that keeps you going. I hope you'll like the other songs aswell..

Dobro: You have no idea about how right you are about hiding in the woods.... That reverb will remain as is. It was recorded with it. Maybe the guitars will be a bit lower in the final mix tho..

Thanx again fowks. Much appreciated!!

I'm finally back to reviewing MP3s. I wanted to wait until I had a decent monitoring setup before I started again.

Anyway, I agree with Bruce on this one. The coolness and originality of the tune overshadows any recording quirks that the song might have.

I like the guitar's reverb. It's interesting and very reminicent of old surf guitars or some old Rolling Stones stuff...like "Mother's Little Helper" (I think that's the name of the song I'm thinking of). Anyway, I really dig that because it adds a real "antique" flavor that complements where the song goes and the image of the song. Does that make sense?

Good job. It's certainly original, and that's refreshing.

Well, I got about 30 seconds of it, and it sounds good so far. I like a little more high-end in the lead (that hook), and the "ding!" of the jar/glass could come down a bit. I'll try again, letcha know little later...

hi meshugah,

that was a tight song. Very innovative.

keep it up, man.

Cool stuff. Kinda reminds me of something Tom Waits might do. Mix-wise, the lyrics are very hard to make out, but that's about all. I'd love to hear something like this in a live setting.

Hullo

CMiller: The reverb of the guitar IS intended and will stay the same :)

LI Slim: Nice way to put it...

Kelly: With those ears, I figured you'd snap that up. Those are two of the details that'll be adjusted in the final mix. Now go d/l the remaining 2 minutes!!! ;)

CJ: Thank you, thank you :D

pglewis: Well.. 3 of us are pretty heavy TW-fans... The lyrics..well. I have to listen to it myself...

'I'm lost in a dream, in a bad bad dream, where gruesome ----s's gazing at me. The ground is full of graves and the trees are full of ravens, and I hear those ----y goblins, they're grasping after me, and it's all plain to see, they won't let me be, I'm lost in a dream, in a bad bad dream. There's a grim and ---- ---- growling out some gibberish, so the ghosts and ghouls and gnombs, they gather in the room, the they gather for a feast, a gory gala (?) feast, they'll have a feast on the remains of me..

Thanx again for listening. Mucho appreciated :)

I agree with Bruce and others. Way cool song. Forgot to listen to the mixing etc.

I like funny sounding songs. Will be doing funny stuff too the comming weeks. (with Zappa's lost episodes as my big example.) I'll add your song to my silly-examples list too. :D

Quite theatrical. I can see visions of zero mostel prancing around the stage. Fun stuff!
