Got 2 Shure SM58's...Any Studio Uses For These?

Their good for micing stuff. Vocals usually. U2 used one as an overhead for the Pop album.

gottchya...I used to use them all the time when they were my only mics, but don't use them much now. My Studio Projects (b1 and C1) have been my recent favorites, but I was just wondering where I'd use them now. I'm currently only mic'ing guitars and vocals with these...and a few small percussion parts. I've just got a little drum machine and bass which runs directly in.

They seemed to distort fairly easily, which kind of bummed me out...especially on vocals. It also seemed like they'd kind of "limit" (as in compress) themselves a bit and then distort. does that sound right? can a mic limit itself?

I like to put one in the singer's hand and do a vocal with monitoring through the speakers.

I'm not following you Ozman...

so you'd record with anonther mic and the 58 or where and when would you do this?

My studio is one room.

Normally, when I track a vocal, I'll shut down the monitors. The singer will monitor through headphones and we'll put it into a condenser, which will be on a mic stand with a pop filter.

I've been working with a singer lately who doesn't thrive in this situation. So, I've gone to just having him hold an SM58. I'll put a Stedman popfilter up between his mouth and where he'll hold the SM58. His performance seems to be better with him listening through the studio monitors rather than headphones. It's more of a comfort issue but it can work with the right singer. Of course, with an SM58, you need a nice preamp. I've done this with an A Designs MP-2, Great River MP-2NV, FMR RNP and Grace 101.

I'd sell the sm58's.

And try and get a hold of some Beyer M69s and M88s.

58's kinda' suck, in my not-so-humble opion.

I heard this but don't know if its true but I will throw it out there.

When Chris Cornel was recording vocals for Audioslaves album he kept blowing out condenser mics because his voice is just crazy powerful, after a few mics were lost they handed him a SM58 and told him to go at it.

If you are cheap, like I am, and have 12 of them lying around for live situations, you can use them as tom mics. They work ok for this purpose. I wouldnt mike a snare or anything that is important.

Bono and Bjork both seem to do all right with them as vocal mics...
