So, I bought an AT4050 and was thinking about unloading one (or both) of these: a Studio Projects B1 and an MXL V67g. I was leaning toward keeping the v67g since I like how it sounds on my voice. Any recommendations, folks?

Well

if you have the mics and you don't know which one to keep, how should anyone else know?

I'm not trying to be a smartass (it just comes naturally), but you have them. You know what they sound like on what you've tried them on. Only you can know which one you like better.

In terms of being all-around useful, conventional wisdom would say keep the SP, as it would be more of a jack-of-all-trades for instruments. But, if you like the way the 67 sounds on your voice, and you want an occasional alternative to the AT, then there you go.

That's the sort of information I was looking for. I'll probably end up selling both anyway because I am a poor man.

I too am poor but selling things is like selling parts of me!

I think you should get rid of the v67, then, definitely.

You don't want to keep mics around that you like. I prefer the method of only keeping around mics that you can't stand the sound of.

All joking aside

besides your voice, what do you record, or are going to want to record in the immediate future?

Have you tried out the AT side by side with whatever you're using the other 2 for, and if so, what conclusions have you come to?

Nope. The mic hasn't arrived yet. I'm not planning on selling either of them until I try them out along side the AT4050.

I obviously wasn't expecting anyone to tell me definitively which one to keep and which to ditch; I recognize that decision is a subjective one that would depend on a) my taste, b) the other mics I have around. Instead, I was hoping someone might say something like, "I've had both sitting around as utility mics for a while and find that I have used mic X more than mic Y."

The jokes have been really hilarious though...

Ya know ... now that you mention it, I know about this guy who just recently started a thread. He owns both mics in question. And he tends to use the v67 more because he likes it on his voice.

He goes under the handle heyhey or something like that. You may have heard of the guy.

The SP B1 is going to cover some of the same ground as the 4050 in cardioid mode. The V67 is going to more be colored than either of them. Your decision would probably be based on what you need - two mics that are somewhat neutral or a neutral and a color.

depending on what you record, how many mics you want to hang at a time and what kind of "sound" you want to get out of the mics, will all dictate whether you keep the B1 and V67 or not.

i was in the same spot a couple years ago. got a few nicer mics (V77, blue dragonfly, etc) that i use on just about everything i previously used the B1 on. now the B1 sits in its case about 99% of the time. but i can't bring myself to part with it b/c it comes in handy sometimes.

the V67 is a different story. i like it on drum OH and it's the right vocal mic for one of the guys i regularly record--fits perfectly on his voice. so i'm hanging onto that one regardless.

i'd recommend hanging onto them b/c you never know when you'll want/need it.....even if you rarely use it. but if you really could use the $60 or so that they'll fetch on the used market, then have at it.

cheers,
wade
