Hello All:

It's been a busy tax season and I haven't visited the board since Mid January or so. Now that tax time is over I have some free time again.

Here is my task:

I am an avid part-time home recorder looking to upgrade what I am doing. I am recording through my onboard soundcard and using my computer speakers. I record vocals and guitar, mainly acoustic and MIDI the rest. I've gotten about as much as I can get out of this bare bones setup and am ready to take a baby step forward.

I got about $500 - $600 to spend and I am in need of a soundcard and some active nearfield monitors.

As far as a soundcard goes I think I'm sold on an M Audio 2496 for $150.

As far as the monitors go, I'm not sure. I've been looking at some Fostex's in the $399 - $499 price range.

How does that combo sound? Any suggestions surely welcome.

Thanks

Hey, rguagenti.

I was recently in your shoes. I decided I needed phantom powered preamps and 24 bit, so I bought a Tascam US122. See:

Some people have trouble with USB, but I didn't. I recorded this with it:

Please give it a listen and post a comment or two on the MP3 forum.

Hope this helps!
