The manual for my Otari MX-5050 MKIII 8-track specifies Anderol 456 for lubing the capstan motor bearings. The product still exists, but it doesn't seem easy to locate in small quantities (five gallons for $275, anyone?)

I don't really have anything comparable on hand, mostly because you can't lube 3M capstan motors. I do have a little can of 3-in-1 20 weight motor oil. Anyone have a source for a good alternative capstan motor lube designed for a wide temperature range with minimal gumming and deposits and low wear?

Cheers,

Otto

A light grade synthetic motor oil works fine...just a few drops as per the manual.

I have an Otari 5050 BIII...and that's what I use.

Or you can get the Otari stuff here in small quantities.
They have other Otari parts.

Click on the "Bearings & Lubrication" link on the left...then click on the "Lubrication/Oil" link at the top (above the "Otari" link).

I'm just throwing this out here... I don't have this on a good source, but I've heard sewing machine oil works? Maybe only for 1/4" decks?
