good soundcards

does anyone know of any good sound cards that don't produce self-noise? i have a soundblaster audigy. There's noise in the signal even when the mic isnt plugged in yet.

You will never get an absolute absence of noise. Noiseless soundcards do not exist. It is not possible to have zero noise.

Having said that, almost anything meant for multi track digital recording will beat the crap out of a soundblaster.

MAudio is "good", I agree. The Delta 1010 has enough ins and outs for most home applications, it is VERY stable software, and it just plain works. The noise floor is pretty darn low.

Any respectable soundcard that is designed with recording in mind will not produce noise that is noticable to you. A Soundblaster is not designed for recording.....I don't care what it says on the box :D
