Hey all, im getting a new emac and am gonna be using the tascam 122 usb interface and was wondering if since im using this i would need to get a good sound card. (also which sound card would work in a emac)

The USB device is equivalent to a sound card, it doesn't need an exiting sound card to work with or through or anything like that.
One caveat is that while most consumer sound cards have a MIDI synth chip on them, none of the USB device that I know of do. So they won't be able to replace that part of a typical consumer soundcard's functionality.
The emacs have on-board sound, though, don't they? I suspect the USB device can be used in addition to the normal onboard sound without any problems.

So will going USB give me a really good recording sound quality assuming im using a new comp, good mics, and cubase SL?
Like better than a Korg 1600?

It all depends. I'm not familiar with either the tascam or korg, but I'd assume that you can get good results using a tascam. I doubt the rascam has very good preamps though.

Better than a Korg 1600? Maybe, maybe not -- but the difference will probably be rather neglible.
Don't forget that you will also need a mic preamp if the Tascam doesn't have one built-in. And a source of phantom power if you are going to use a condenser mic.

Don't forget that with USB there's limited bandwidth so you can only record like 4 or 6 tracks at the same time. I'm not exactly sure what the right number is. It shouldn't matter if you're only doing one or two tracks at a time.
