good soundcard for my set-up

Heres what I got. I just got a new computer. Hewlett Packard P3 900mhz with 128ram. It came with the build in soundcard.
I run fruityloops software and take the output of my soundcard into my akai DPS16 and record that way. I was told that it really doesnt matter what kind of soundcard I use for my setup.

....But, now i get a slight flange-like static with this set up. And before I had an AWE Gold SOundcard. an old one and had no problems with any kind of static artifacts.

I cant install my old soundcard into my new computer cause it only has PCI slots.

1. Should the soundcard matter in this situation?

2. I have the same cables, this shouldnt affect anything Im presuming.

3. If I need a soundcard what should I get. Remembering Im on a tight budget. THe computer is brand new!

one cool thing about FRUITY LOOPS is that you can sequence and record wav files ready for cd burning...FL is pretty good at glitch free mixdown..

if your old soundcard is ISA, you don't want a slot for it..it's basically garbage.

FL should perform well with a soundblaster live series card, but i haven't tested it.....i suppose i could.....

if you like FL , go check out the latest CREAMWARE PULSAR card....that gets into major cash........but it's very cool..

have you checked out propellerhead's REASON? if you like FRUITY LOOPS, you will probably like REASON too.....
 
Maybe I missed something. When you sat "built in" soundcard, do you mean onboard chip on the mobo? If so, your search for a sound card has begun. Liberating in a way, huh?
If this is the case, and you do find a card, don't forget to disable the onboard sound chip in your c-mos.

Yeah, on my old computer i installed the AWE Gold Card and had to disable the onboard soundcard. After that, no conflicts.
I know I need a decent card now, but dont know which to buy. I thought for my setup, all I need is a basic card, cause Im just running the outs of the soundcard into my Hard disk recorder. As long as its 16bit 44.1, I should be all set, is this correct?
Im not doing any recording on the computer.

solved my own problem....

I had the computer volume so low that I had to turn the trim inputs really high, thus causing some noise. Silly me, learn something every hour.

hey sondriven...

does that Akai have digital (S/PDIF) inputs?

If so you may want to consider a sound card that has S/PDIF outs - this way your Sequences never have to leave the digital domain (ie. no D/A - A/D conversion needs to take place)

just a thought...

S/PDIF sounds like the route to take, what kind of money am I looking at to get a desent card with that jack on it.

You can probably get a decent card in the range of $100-200

For example - The Midiman DIO 24/48 can be had for around $120

There are a bunch of others as well - just do a web search and you should be able to pull some up

you may be able to get better prices than what is listed on that site - I would definitely search around before purchasing.
