I think we need to really get into this thread. I am guessing that a lot of people here really do not need HUGE monitoring systems. I would even venture to say that models that are of importance here would need an additional sub set-up since a pair of nearfields that would NOT need an additional sub would be excessively expensive AND overly large models of nearfields speakers.

Has anybody found a nice smaller set of monitors? Through my research I have found 2 brands that kind of target this application nicely. NHT and Blue Sky. NHT had a m-00 and s-00 studio monitor series that has been replaced by a super 90 and 8/10d sub system. NHT does not have a sub crossover to filter the lines to their l&r monitors. Blue Sky does seem to, but their subs per system seem a good bit larger. The exo2 system seems good, but maybe a bit too small and the next system up has a fairly large sub.

Dynaudio has a smaller sub available, but their nearfields are fairly large (speaking in terms of their smallest powered unit bm5a).

That's what I have.

Well - I am just about toe get a pair of the Geithain RL906 monitors.

When I compared them with the large studio monitors they sounded almost exactly the same - the only difference was that the large monitors were more "effortless" and that the bottom end was, obviously, more full. But, in essence, they were exactly the same.

They are small and easily portable and I will use them for location recording.

The vertical bass ports don't pump air at you like front ported monitors and as the air goes up you gt the bass extension without exciting the room so much.

At a similar size, but cheaper, are the Neumann KH120.

Both these monitors are 2-way designs and both, actually, have versions available with a digital input (RL906D and KH120D) - the RL906 is a co-axial design.
