Hello,

I am trying to output a digital mix (without downmixing to 2 stereo tracks) via Nuendo. I am basically looking for an adequate sound card with S/PDIF coaxial IN/OUT that won't be too hard on the wallet.

So far I have seen the SB DB III (add on brackett) but it is fixed at 48Khz output. As well as many others...but I did find 2 sound cards that are only $23 but I'm not sure on all the specs and how good they are at digital output, and S/PDIF I/O.

They are the the Chaintech Model# AV515M and Aopen Model# AW850D.

Does anyone have these or know of a soundcard that they can suggest?

thanks
Nick

I have an aopen aw850 deluxe which as far as i can tell is identical to the aw850D (my card came with the manual for the aw850d).

I have successfully used it to record and output digitally at 24bit 44.1 or 48khz without resampling. I have also used it with the maudio dio2448 drivers to get low latency asio drivers. The analog i/o doesnt work properly with the maudio drivers but digital works fine.

All these cards (aw850 d/deluxe, dio2448, chaintech) are based on the cmedia cmi8738 chipset. The aw850d says it uses an aopen chipset but it is also the cmi8738.

hey alfalfa,

thanks for the reply. Do you think I should just install the proper drivers and not mess with the DIO2448? I have XP and I read that the DIO's S/PDIF out w/XP does not work at all.

I was going to get M-Audio's DIO 2448 but I read about how it's not XP complient yet. They should really get on the ball with updating their drivers!

also I forgot,

how do you export digital audio? with the optical or coaxial? I want to do coaxial.

Unless you need low latency asio drivers (for soft synths or real time effects etc) then its probably best to stick with the latest cmedia drivers. I use win98se so not sure how well the dio2448 drivers work under xp. Digital i/o works fine with win98se.

I have gotten both the optical and coaxial i/o to work successfully.

the 8738 (is my memory serves me correctly) just doesn't work with Win2K or XP. I have one of these on a computer I have that I use as a word processor and a CD player, and it can't play wave files without poping or clicking. Even the latest C-Media drivers don't work.
I don't even try anymore.
Baah.

I have not heard of 8738 cards not working with windows xp. Search for reviews of hercules muse, terratec aureon fun etc, all of which are 8738 cards that have been released and reviewed recently (hence with winxp). Also lots of people using 8738 (aopen and chaintech) cards under winxp at www.avsforum.com
