What's a good reverb plugin? Are they all relatively the same, or are some more quality than others?

They definately vary, both in sound quality and complexity. The basic ones come with most software sequencers. The best plugins in general are likely the Waves ones. The Renaissance Reverb is particularly good. However, the Waves plugins are absurdly overpriced imo.

Which hardware reverb unit at the same price level would you say has the same performance? Or better, since it's so "absurdly" overpriced?

There are no really good plugin reverbs yet.

UAD, in theory, should be able to deliver the goods. Supposedly they're in the process of developing what is going to be called "Dreamverb." Instead of designing it so it can work on several tracks of audio at once efficiently, they are instead going to make it a resource hog in order to get the best possible sounding verb. I can't wait.

Well Lexicon and TC Electronics hardware verb units are good. Not that I have ever used them, that just seems to be the general consensus.

Well, i use Lexicon 480L and TC Electronic System6000 every day - TC is absolutely a real thing.
Best plug-in reverbs are Waves RVerb, Kind Of Loud RealVerb, Afroverb and Acoustic Mirror. :)

RVerb is FAR better than old Lexicon, and old Lex still cost around 4000-5000 $.

I like Sonitus' Ultrafunk verb as much or better as my outboard Lex MPX500. It's cheap and easy on the CPU. It is great, better than Waves too in my opinion. No Pace either.

Reverb is (as many things) bound to taste.

I like to cast my vote for Reverb. It from Silverspike. I don't see it mentioned here often, but many people that use it prefer it over the majority of other stuff.

You can get it (cheap) at www.silverspike.com

I also like the free Freeverbtoo that's based on Jezar's freeverb algorithm. You can get it from www.sinusweb.de
Grab their other freebee Multilens while you are there, loads of fun.

Peter.

Has anyone ever tried the DSP/fx Studioverb? It's about my personal favorite.

I'll put out my vote for Sonic Timeworks ReverbX. Love this verb! The 4080L is good too, but not quite as many parameter adjustments. I find a lot of use for Waves Trueverb as well...excellent for giving nice room sounds.

TC has made its mark on the industry with reverb hardware units so my vote goes to the TC reverb plugin not as complicated as most of the others but sounds pretty darn real for a "plug-in"

Sonic Timeworks ReverbX is a close 2nd maybe a tie

i can image that the TC powercore(DSPcard) reverb is absolutely stunning

There does seem to be a dearth of exceptional reverb plugs but there a few very usable ones. You need to work them to get them to put out what you need. Waves Rverb of course probably tops the list. Its not overpriced at all. Consider the ren package which includes renverb, RCL, and renEQ...the 3 most used plugs of all time all for $200. I agree though there are more quality EQs and compressors out there than we need and not nearly enough reverbs and quality delays, flanges and choruses. PSP just came out with a delay called Lexicon42 which is very, very nice. Warm and very analog sounding. Although there are decent delays, waves, fxpansion makes a nice one this new one is the best Ive heard thus far.
PSP also has an EXCELLENT stereoplug pack...a group of 4 stereo plugs that smoke the *industry standard* waves stereoimager in terms of quality and flexibility. Ive gotten wider strings, synths, pianos, etc with these plugs than any other imager. And the pack is only $24!!
Im waiting for PSP to put out a reverb.

those guys in Poland def know what they're doing...have u used/heard the PSP Vintage warmer

i love it....gives the ommphhh if ur drums, can air out a vocal nicely, make ur track more 'inya face' its great..its a compressor/tapesimulator/EQ just for 149.99

well thats if ur looking for that :D

i wanna hear the delay

The Time works delay 6022 is pretty impressive too

JuSum, that's good to know. I've been thinking about purchasing that delay. I love their PianoVerb, which is free.

Teacher, Ive been plugging these guys for the last year on here. I have the VW along with the lesser known and equally great, Mixpack.

;)

I haven't found one I've been totally happy with. Here are the ones I have:

SF Acoustic Mirror - The reverbs are too realistic for me

DSPFX StudioVerb - I like its sound but I can't seem to get the right balance. I either don't hear it or hear too much.

Digidesign D-Verb - This is the one I end up using not that it's that good, it's the lesser of the evils.
