Good recording mixers?

I am looking for some suggestions on a good 12-16 mixers. I currently have the obligatory Mackie 1604 VLZ. Its not bad, it works, its real boring sounding.

I do most of my mixing in Samplitude so I dont need a lot of channels. But I do need some decent sounding ones. Maybe some w/ some better sounding eqs and tape returns (if necessary?). I just want pres w/ a little more character.

I would like to do it on the cheap to.

Oh yeah and I want a million dollars and a pony.

Ok....sigh...lay it on me!

Thanks,
Twonky

what is cheap?

do you need lots of sends and groups and mutes and automation?

anyway, a cheap way to get some character is to pick up early yamaha mixers, the ones with transformers on every channel. those you can find for well under a grand. if you are looking to spend more like 1 to 2 grand you have a lot more options...

Eeldip you DeGrassi lover!

as for your other questions

Automation= nope
Lots of routing options= would be nice
Groups= again, nice but not totally needed

imostly want just good sounding pres w/ some more charater.

A big place w/ a mirror to do my coke would be nice too...

Maybe you should look at getting a stand alone pre, it's better to get one channel of world class sound than 16 channels of mediocrity and the redundancy of another console.

Stick with the Mackie till you get more money :o).

Seriously, I'd love to have a 1604 but if I could I'd get a Mackie 32x8. If I were going analog or a yamaha 01v96 or 02r96 for digital. All of which are the reason I said save up some more $$$.

I second (or third?) getting a dedicated high end mic pre.
The Mackie isn't horrible, and for the 1g to 1.3g you have
to play with, you could get 1 really kickin' Pre, or 2 very
good one's.

My vote would be 1 really kickin pre, like the GREAT RIVER
ME-1NV Mic Pre.

Other wise the Ramsa idea is valid too.
Having a true RECORDING console is nice- Less Patching.
I also recommend looking for a used Soundtracs
Topaz Project 8 mixer. Tons of control room features.
A true RECORDING console, and the Pre's are nice step
up from anything Mackie. Used to be spendy when new,
but now can be had cheaply on E-bay.

Have fun.

I had a Ramsa console in the early 80s. It was without a doubt the worst sounding (no bass/nasaly) mixer I have ever used. Maybe they are better now.
Allen & Heath is the way to go.
