I am interested in hearing some opinions on good quality microphones. I have around $1500 to spend on mics and was wondering what you all thought would be a good way to go. I will be recording everything (guitars, bass, drums, vocals). Any info will be appreciated.

Greatings Magnum. You might want to try a search. This topic has been covered EXTENSIVLY.

I understand that the topic has been covered; however, with technology constantly changing and new products hitting the market all the time there might be chances in advice. Anyway, if some of you could actually respond to THIS thread I would very much appreciate it.

Ok...let me try asking a more specific question:

I already have a number of cheaper mics at my disposal (sm 57s, 58s, r11s, etc). What I need to know is, should I blow my whole load on a pair of good matched condensers or buy several "cheaper" mics. There is no direct answer to this from searching, I've tried.

Thanks

p.s. If the answer is consenser, what are the best I can buy for around $1500 total.

You could go with a large-dia condenser - especially for vocals. An AKG 4033, a Shure KSM44 or KSM32, a Rode NT2....

You could also go with a pair of small-dias for acoustic instruments and drum overheads. AKG 4041s or 4051s...

Stick to the SM57 for mic'ing guitar amps, also snares and toms.

i would look at getting a pair of small capsule condensers like the oktavas(do a search) and a nice large diaphragm condenser like the ones bruce listed

If you opt for the matched pair of small diaphram Octavas (about $600 for a matched pair) you can pick up the LOMO large diaphram capsuls for them for around $300 a piece. Then you'd have a killer vocal mic too. http://www.oktava.com/

MICS & MICS

Yo Magnum of P & I:

Get out of that sun in Hawaii before you burn. However, shopping for mics can become a career in itself. I wonder why someone with a bunch of pezzutos hasn't opened a studio where one can stop in and try ten or twelve mics for a service charge?

But, I just bought a Yorkville Apex 430 mic for my studio because I just bought a pair of Yorkville YSM-1 monitors. I was so impressed with the monitors, I decided to buy the mic just for the hell of it. I don't have the mic yet but should have it within a few days. I'll write a report on the mic when I get it but if it is better than my AKG 3000, which isn't too bad a mic, I won't be surprised. I'll be very happy. If it isn't a good mic, I'll mail it to Bruce V. and let him analyze it. The Yorkville mic sells for about 185 minus 25%. So, the price is right. The Yorkville speakers were so reasonable that I won't mention the price again; they are very good speakers or they just go with my studio gear.

Yo Magnum of PI and Champaign:

I just tried out the Yorkville Apex 430; it beats the hell out of the AKG 3000 I just unplugged. Technology is wonderful and it keeps improving day by day, especially in electronics.

Since you have the budget, you ought to get one of these babies or you can spend more and get the other Apex model with switches for roll off, etc. I like the 430 because there are no switches; just the mic.

Comes with a nice shock mount. Less than 142 pezzutos if you get the 25% break like I did.

Yo Green Machine,

Do you have an AT4033?? I posted a thread in this forum a while back asking people to compare the AT4033 to an Apex mic and no one could seem to do it. Since you now HAVE the Apex, I'd like to know if it knocks the socks off the 4033. It would be really SCHWEET if it did because it's about 100-150 clams less and I have no way of comparing them myself. :(
