good mic for general recording

I am looking for a mic for general recording purposes. I will use it mainly for recording voice overs and sound effects.

I've heard some good things about shure sm 58 for its price, any recommendations?
 
I don't think it is particularly well-suited for overall voice-over work (but it depends very much on the talent's voice)....

Check out an Audio-Technica 4033 or an Electro-Voice RE20.
 
As an all purpose mic I'd have to ehco the 4033.
 
Most versatile IMHO would be the Sennheiser 421.
You can pick up a nice one off e-bay for around $250 or less.
Most of them have a five position bass roll-off dial BTW,
very handy. The newer MKII model is brighter than the previous
models, not a "better/worse", just slightly different.

Chess is right, but if you go for this mic get one of the older ones.

The newer ones ARE bright. Too bright for broadcast.

Watch the auctions. Make damn sure you get one with the XLR connector or you'll be connecting two cables together if you need the length.

The Tushel connector is particular to Europe. It is a four-pin screw-on connector that doesn't get on well in the States.

There were also early models without the five-position bass roll-off rotary switch, Don't buy this one either.

Most I think you'll be safe with. Most are the regular MD-421U, but ask to be sure. You missed a hell of a deal two nights ago on E-bay. There were two MD-421's going for $235 listed by the same person. That $235 was the "Buy it Now Price". They'er long gone.

mhuang, sorry to rain on the parade, however, the general consensus is that the MXL2001 isn't a good condenser!
See www.prorec.com for their (anti) review.
Enter MXL2001 in the search field and you'll see it.

The last time I recorded a General, I used a Marshall.

The other Army guys seemed pleased with the results.
