Good headphones for mixing??

I'm not a huge expert on headphones, but I read a lot of great reviews about the AKG K240 Acoustic Monitoring headphones (http://amzn.to/a7iFo2), not to be confused with another similar product (http://amzn.to/cNHqxd). See, that in itself confuses me, lol... I don't know what the major difference is between the two, but I ended up buying the monitoring headphones, and they sound pretty nice. I like the clarity of the sounds, but the problem is overall the volume is way too low for me. Even after getting a headphone amp, the music just sounds distorted if I turn the volume up too high. Does anybody have a recommendation of a similar type of semi-open headphone that is good for mixing and will sound as good, but not so low volume-wise? Also, I don't want to spend an outrageous amount of money (I got lucky and found these for about $60 on Ebay), but I want pretty good quality. Any help would definitely be appreciated. Thanks!

Makes me wonder what kind of amp you have.
Any decent headphone amp should be able to drive those.

But ....... I have some Sennheiser HD-600's which are way outside your budget but for banging around I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD700's which sound very similar despite the large price difference.
You can get the ATH-AD700's for about $80 new.
I recommend them all the time ..... best bang for the buck in 'phones.

Also ..... be prepared for the many responses you're gonna get telling you that if you mix on 'phones your mixes will end all life on Earth and terror will win!

haha, Yeah I've already anticipated the posts about monitoring on headphones. I use speakers as well, but sometimes I have no choice but to use headphones, at least to kind of pre-mix until I can use the speakers. I'm using the Headroom Airhead Amp, which I also bought from Ebay, so I don't know how "used" it is, and it is the least expensive Headroom amp available, so I don't know how much of an effect that has on it. But anyway, thanks for the help, I will look into the Audio Technica's...

well Headroom makes good stuff. I have an old Headroom Max that I use.
But I have no experience with the Airhead so I dunno about that.

You mean all that stuff we learned in school and get from our trusted governments isn't true ?

Harvey Gerst used to sell the MoreMe cans for dirt cheap. I don't know about the fidelity for mixing but they are certainly loud enough even just taking the feed off my M-Audio interface or Mackie board.

I never mixed with cans but obviously they are helpful for overdubbing.

Is this the right forum for this question. Don't really matter I suppose but you may get more responses in Mixing.
