is this good for makin urban beats? any of ya'll have this equipment? Is it easy to operate?

Roland what? If your talking about the MC series (303, 505) Grooveboxes, probably not. How much are you looking to spend? I would personally go with either the MPC 2000 (or 4000) or the Korg Triton. Then again, I still have a blast with my Ensoniq EPS 16+. I think there are some peeps on here that use the ASR-X and ASR-10 which you can get off eBay for less than 700.
Peace~

What?? This is the type of music these units were specifically designed for. Of course they are not in the same league as the MPC or Triton, but they don't try to be and they're significantly cheaper as well. Neither has any sort of sampling feature, but they are really hard to be beat for standalone pattern-based hardware sequencers, sounds are usuable in some cases too.

Ginuwine is asking about the MC-09 Phrase Lab though. I've never used it, but the specs don't look all that impressive. This is mainly used for sequencing loops as opposed to composing/playing your own tracks. If you plan on using loops then software (think ACID) is way more powerful than really any piece of hardware (except perhaps the VP9000). The MC-09s addition of the monosynth really doesn't sweeten the deal for me. I'd be willing to bet that it has a very weak, thin sound. The step sequencer might be a nice feature, but from what I can tell that only controls the monosynth, which is obviously very limiting.

If it's loops I say go for ACID, it's really unbeatable in that arena. If you're looking to compose your own tracks you may want to take a look at a used MC-303, MC-505, JX-305. These are great machines for making hip-hop. There are plenty of other choices out there as well. Let us know what exactly you're looking for from the gear and we can make a more specific recommendation.

well I want to make beats that sounds somewhat like Timbaland's. R&B combined wit a lil hiphop u know what i'm sayin?
what's the best equipment for that?

I'm lookin for a gear that has instrument sounds, and of course that has snares, kicks, all that drum sound. That mc-505 cost a lil too much. i'm only lookin to spend up to $400.

damn G,

after all those hits you've had... Pony, Same ole G... all you can afford is a $400 sampler???

man that record contract must be some sh*t.

but cuttin' timbaland out of the mix will save you some dollars.

lol..

so no tips for me, crosstudio?

there's no gear that's nice and cost only $400?

Ginuwine,

Yeah, I guess the 505 would be a bit out of your range, but again I would suggest buying something used with your budget. Take a look around the net for used gear and you'll probably find lots of options in that range. Here's a few for you.

This is a link for a used Roland MC-307, the price is $429.99. This
is very similar to the MC-303.

Here is an MC-303 for $299.99, great price on this one.

Here is the Korg M1. This is a keyboard, but has an 8 track sequencer and can do pretty much the same thing as the MC seies, but with better sounds IMHO. It's $399.99.

This was just a quick search on one site. There is a lot of gear out there, you just have to find it. Anything listed above would suit you well. Good luck.

i agree with stray. if you are looking for something under $400 that is going to be worth your time look for something used.

here in the DC area we have several second hand music stores (Atomic, Wheaton Music Center) and a ton of pawn shops. i use to cruise around just looking for something cool... back before i got married with children.

also take a look at internet auctions like ebay.

Hey Cross,

I just took at look at you studio page posted on another thread. Nice layout, it looks like everything is easy to get to. I'm about to get a PS2 for my studio too, something to do in between sessions or when creativity runs out.

Where did you get that pop screen? That is the baddest looking pop screen I've ever seen and would match my mic real nice. Let me know.

Thanks

I don't want a keyboard.. I want something that u can make loops out off. something wit the kick, the snare, the CHH, etc. along with instrument sounds too..

Did you look at the MC-303 and 307? Those are not keyboards, the M1 was the only keyboard listed. They both will do what you're looking for.

Here's pictures of the two units mentioned. If you want to see the actual boxes you'll be buying you'll have to email MusicGoRound.

Don't know if it's specifically the sort of thing ur looking for, Cubase SL is around your price range (you can find more info. at steinberg.net)

Though from what I've read here, saving up an extra $200 or is worth it 'coz SX is supposed to be, well...... unstopable........

I wish I had the money........

All I could afford was Cubasis VST 3.0:( , it isn't that bad - it's just these are BRILLIANT!

Go check out eBay. I bought an eps 16+ for about 250 and I have never had a problem with it even thought it was used. Check out the Ensoniq ASR-X. The sequencer sucks on it but the sounds are great and its a drum machine style sampler/re-sampler. You'll be able to have your kicks, snares and other samples as well. The Black ASR-X is between 300-500 and the red turbo version is a little more. Good Luck
