Not bad for an early run with Fruity. The drum tones sounded live. However, about halfway through, it was obvious it was a machine for two reasons. First, the drums were repetitive. Second, the consistent tones of each hit were too exact to be a real drummer. Otherwise, a fun little tune.
Thanks for the clip. I wanted to hear what Fruity Loops could do. Right now I'll stick with my 1080, DM5, and sequencing software, mainly because I'm used to it and can get adequate sounds with a little tweaking.

Check out audiomulch.com for a powerful softsynth. The drum sounds that come with it arent good but you can import your own. Ive found this program to be very reliable and effective for many things if youre good at splicing and dragging. Although the sound is limited to electronica, the sounds (once tweaked) are unique. The only drawback with it is the 16 bit limitation. The same goes for fruityloops and all the other freeware and shareware softsynths out there. Acidpro, Rebirth and the others that cost $3-400 all run on 24 bit/32 bit float platforms which is a serious advantage over 16 bit softsynths.

Those drum tracks sound pretty damn good to me. I've been doing the pc based drum thing for a while and these results sound passable to me. Did you order the full cd? I am thinking of getting it.
WaveSurgeon is a great tool for extracting and cutting up drum samples. Anyone use it?

amonte - are you referring to the 2Dudes CD? I actually just ordered it this morning. I exchanged some emails with one of the dudes, Bill Lanham... nice dude. Anyway, if you order the CD they've got on the site there, you'll get a straight audio CD and you'll have to sample it with something like Wavesurgeon.
Bill offered to do a CD with wavefiles, which is perfect for me since I'm using Fruity. All you need to do is order the CD on their site, and at the same time, send Bill an email noting that you want the wavefile version. You can also note that within the order form online. His email is: bill@2dcd.com
Tell Bill that you're from the HR message boards... it's good to spread the word!

wait...I'm a little lost - I thought that these were cd's of drum hits and samples? They aren't in wave format? Is it just a cd with a track for each hit? Or are they loops? The problem with chopping up loops is that it's hard to get the decay to sound natural if another drum comes in over the top.

for building songs with these samples, is Acid better or Fruity better? I've never used Acid - I thought it was just for pasting loops together. Is there a cheaper version of Acid available?

Was in the market for drums. Couldn't decide if i wanted to get an external drum machine deal like the DR202 (cheap and easy) or if i wanted to keep it all on my computer. The all in one place idea sounded much better and after reading your reviews and comments i've decided to go fruity. I run cakewalk, so the compatability is guaranteed. I did purchase Acid Pro 2.0 and it's collecting dust because it was far too advanced for my needs. (yes, i'm no good at this stuff) Drums are the WEAKEST link in my songs because i'm so horrid at it!!! But i believe after listening to the sample and the comments that i too will be fruity. Although i'm not GIVING up on Acid...I just don't feel like taking the time out to figure it out. For some strange reason i can't be creative and technical at the same time.

What I recommend to you mshea and everyone else who isnt happy with their drum sounds is to get a real drummer to program your drum tracks. Good drumming whether its programmed or played live hardly ever comes from someone who hasnt studied the instrument.

I have Cakewalk and DrumTrax for importing the basic patterns to select from. I'm just getting up to speed on midi drums and programing them. Can someone explain the differences between this method and the Acid or Fruitloops way of doing it?

i think the best thing i've found is acid music with RADS construction kit...real stereo drums, broken out by kick-snare patterns and hi-hat patterns which are separate so you can put them together as you wish. they also have some (not a ton) fills...and individual drum samples, that are good, sound natural, and most important, work great with the loops.
the kick/snare patterns are solid, and the hi-hat patterns sound like someone playing the drums, not just the same sample repeated. there's probably 1500 samples on the RADS cd, and with the way that you can break them out, there's got to be millions of combinations.
the RADS volume 1 cd was $39.99 from pocketfuel.com...acid music $69.99 from compusa. i also have fruity loops which i paid another $70 for, but even with acid and rads, you're talking $110, for really great drum sounds (not midi compatible, but i just feed them into my vs 840 and move them to the right time), and acid is so much easier to work with than just about anything else i've worked with.
one warning about rads: the volume 1 cd loops are NOT acidized, so some of the results can be wierd until you change the acid properties...i found a program called acidhead, that will do this on multiple files, so it hasn't been a problem. but i was bummed when i first realized this.
