Musicians Friend-- mxl2001 and mxl603s--$155.00 package

How is the 2001? I have a 603s and would like another, but don't know about the 2001.

thanks,

dtb

The 2001 is a little harsh, but there are mods you can do to it to make it a really good mic.

The 603 has its uses too. I wish that they did a 2-603 package.

the $155 at Mf is the best price on that combo i had found until I went to Music123.com and clicked on the "found a better price click here". They beat MF's price by 10 bucks. A lot of music websites will beat a competitors price if you email them. As far as quality, I have heard pretty good things about the 2001 but have also heard they are "a little harsh"

I would avoid any mic that you have to modify to make it sound good.I have a Mxl2001p and I don't think its a good mic at all.It is not a little harsh,it is harsh to the point of being unusable. You would be better off buying a Mxl V67 for $99 from Mars Music and purchasing the 603 seperately,it might cost you an additional $10 or $20 bucks but you would have two very nice mics instead of a nice one and a POS that needs a modification (which would cost minimum of about $40 and doesn't look all that simple).Really with all the better inexpensive LDs on the market there is no reason to even look at the 2001p.When I bought mine it was really about the only LD out there under $200,now there are many choices out there and more coming every day(Studio Projects B-series).If you have a 2001(like I do)do the mod,but if you don't have a 2001p there are many better mics to spend your money on.

Thanks Randy,
Thanks for reply Randy. Good info. I have a 603s and like it with acoustics and am looking to get another. But if the 2001 sucks I'll keep looking for the 603s alone.
Thanks again,

You are welcome.I know 8th Street music sells the 603 but they have it for like $80.I think there was a thread recently that had a place that sold them considerably cheaper.8th Street also sells Studio Projects so they should have the b-series when they are available.I think that Mars Music has the Mxl V67m for $99 and it is a favorite of many people on this forum.

The place Randy is referring to is Shreve Audio. They had the 603 for $49, but it lasted maybe a couple days. Last I heard, the price was back up to normal (around $80).

I also agree with Randy's suggestion on mics. You can't go wrong with the 603 and v67. Be aware that the v67 comes in at least two flavors, the v67g and v67m. There has been lots of discussion on these two versions, and consensus seems to be they are identical expect for the color, and maybe some internal wiring that likely has little effect on the sound. However, the v67g is about $80 more than the v67m. The v67g does come with a shock mount, but that only costs about $30. The v67m can be picked up at Mars music only (as far as I Know) for $99.

Anybody has a comment on Alesis GT51/52

It seems alot of stores unloading Alesis mikes. I assume it's because of GT is on it's own again and Alesis is having trouble or the mikes are realy bad.
I can not find any comments on these mics. Any info appriciated.
Thanks
