G'day...as many of you may know, the Rode mics are made in Australia. I'm heading down there next week and was hoping I might be able to get one of these cheap, considering they'd be made locally and the US$ is so strong.

My problem is, I've never used either of these 2 mics, and don't know which one to get. The search function is down so I can't search the archives either. But in a nutshell, can anyone tell me the difference between the 2, and why I'd want one over the other?

Thanks and goodonya.

the nt2 is about 3 times the price of the nt1. it is a much better vocal mic.

nt1 was one of the first "praised" low budget condensor mics from a while back...but, a lot of people turned out dissapointed with it.

I've heard some good stuff done with them though...if its cheap enough, definately get one.

but, compared to the nt2, it is definately lacking.

I have used both the NT-2 and NT-1 on vocals and overheads. The NT-2 is clearly superior for both puposes, to my ears anyway. The NT-2 has a great "silky" quality, if that makes sense. I was not too impressed by the NT-1.

Actually, that would be the B2.

I have since learned that the B1 is a different beast altogether. Still very good for the money, but it ain't no NT2.

You can get a used NT2 stateside for about $300 ... shoot, maybe even less now ... that's what I paid for mine about a year and a half ago.

I would go and audition a bunch of different mics before buying. I recently went to get a condenser mic and the sales guy was really great to let me check out all the popular condensers. For my voice-and I stress that- the ShureKSM 27 was the clear winner. I was a bit surprised, but hey, it's what makes MY voice, My vocal sound truely rich and optimal. The Rode NT's didn't come close. But again, my voice. I learned a valuable lesson; don't buy for the name or someones say so. Buy what truely does you most justice. That said, I think it's great to have lots of mics in the locker though because eventually it won't be just me I'm recording. Good luck with your purchase geekgurl.

Wow, sorry geekgurl. I meant good luck with your purchase OCTORUSS!

Over here, not only are rode mics cheaper, but there seems to be a price war going on. I know in perth at the moment, you can pick up the NT1000 for AUD$695 from kosmic sound (www.kosmic.com.au). this is great for us aussie too, because its significantly lower than the retail price...

Hey octo!

I own the NT2 and I love it... the main difference with the NT1, is that the NT2 has two patterns, cardioid and omni, the NT1 is only cardioid.
Second difference, it has a dual capsule, much better than the single one provided with the NT1.
Third difference: it's a better mic, no matter what for.

BUT:

you can get the NT2 or you can get two NT1's for the same price, so you will have a very useful stereo pair.

Peace...

Wow, I guess us Yanks have to consider ourselves fortunate. Aftre doing a little investigating, I found the average prices for Rode mics sold in the US are:
NT1000: $300
NTK: $500
NT2: $400
NT1: $200

But looking at some of the Australian web sites, their own mics made in Australia (with the exception of the NT2) are more expensive than in the US!
NT1000: $370
NTK: $565
NT2: $370
NT1: $212

It looks like the only souvenir I'll be bringing back from Australia is a Kylie Minogue poster.

Yeah...

I live in Argentina and I bought it from Samash.com (NT2)

I paid less than 400$ new.

powercouple,
how easy is it in argentina to import gear directly from us stores?
it surely is a pain in the ass in brazil.:(

It's maybe even harder here...

I bought it from samash with credit card...had the mic sent to NY to my uncle's house...my grandpa payed him a visit...brought me the mic...
Had to wait till that visit though...

Peace...

mierda.:(
i feel sorry for us.
i can usually import stuff directly, but i have to pay the ridiculously expensive shipping charges (about twice as expensive as in brazil BEFORE the conversion from dollar to real), plus 60% import taxes. some brands can't be sold directly to costumers in brazil, like roland, yamaha etc.
i sometimes get a friend in the usa to send me stuff, and declare it way below its real value so i pay less taxes. if a package's under $50, i don't pay any taxes at all. i know it's wrong, but since my country doesn't really MANUFACTURE anything similar to what i need, i have to import it, and the import taxes are absurdly high.
i wanted to have a rhodes piano shipped to me from the states, but besides the $600 i would pay for the instrument, i'd still have to pay like $700 for shipping via ups, AND like $700-800 for taxes!! total = about $2100. i gave it up.

Did somebody say Brazil?

I wish I was there. Tenho saudades do Brasil, e nem viajei para lá!

come on over whenever you want to.:)
