I am going to be in the market for a computer very soon and I am looking to get something very geared towards home recording. I have some pretty good ideas of what I want already but I was hoping some of you would take the time to fill me in on some of the components you're using and you know, kinda what's hot and what's not. Price is of course a factor but I'm not looking to be stingy either. I'm probly willing to spend a total of around three thousand for the entire set-up give or take a few hundred dollars. Uh, those would be Canadian dollars by the way. So yeah, any tips would be greatly appreciated...Thanx

I will suggest to you what I have, since I am very happy wwith it. My biggest suggestion is on the soundcard.

Guillemot MAXI Studio ISIS soundcard. I don't hear much about them on this BBS although they pop up from time to time. It's an 8 in/4 out card. It only cost me $200 off e-Bay in immaculate condition. They are up there pretty regularly.
AS far as computer is concerned.

I'd grab a PIII 800 or better. - $200-$300 depending

256 Megs of ram. - $200 or so

21 inch monitor (I have one and now everything else seems teeny, smaller could work for you) $250 or so

An ASUS CUV4X motherboard. I'm very happy with this mother board, and it fits the flip chips. 133Mhz bus. $120 or so

Some video card, doesn't really matter. I'd get one with 8 megs. $20-50

A CD-R and a CD-Rom. CD-R's are really damn cheap now (Under $100 if you don't buy a really fast one, or look used)and are so useful! Any generic CD-Rom will do. $100-$150 for CD-R, $50 for CD-Rom.

I don't know what you have as far as other gear goes, but I'd keep my computer with the bare essentials as listed plus thigns like the CD-R and keep the rest of my cash for other things. All together my computer cost me $1300 or so US dollars. I also got the case (Around $60). I run e-Magic Logic Audio Platinum for multi tracking and Wavelab + Cool Edit for editing. (Cooledit can do cool noise reduction type stuff) I can do 16 tracks+ with effects no problem with my setup.

Save some money where you can and buy some good monitors.

i just finished putting together my new daw and after about a month of usage it seems solid.p3 800eb chip on a asus cusl-2 mobo;512meg pc133 cas2 ram;maxtor diamondmaxplus 40gig 7200rpm ide drive(54098 i think;exact model is important with these drives as all diamondmaxplus are not the same,i.e. lower access time and str)plextor 20x8 scsi burner from my old daw.adaptec 2930u scsi contoller card,motu2408 from old daw,windows98se and cakewalk pro audio 9,sbpci512card for resident sound.i recorded 24 trks of audio no problem with a decent amount of plug ins to test it.cpu usage between 25 and 35% hard disk usage between 35 and 45%.i still haven't tweaked it yet and probably won't unless i max out or have problems.i spent about 4 months researching this setup and the people on this bulletin board shared a wealth of information.i hope this helps you.thanx to all on this board !

Much Gratitude

thanx lots.

I Sincerely appreciate the responses...have you guys ever used the echo line of soundcards? I noticed they come up alot around here and I was thinkin about getting the gina.
Is it worth the dough or am I better off to stick to something a little less $$? Is the gina more pro type material?...anywayz...thanks again.

Oh yeah, if anyone else answers this, could you also please take the time to check out my other post under this same heading...it's called "clicks and pops are plaguing me...please help!" I don't want to go out and spend lotsa $$ on a new machine and have the same problem.

Later
