Hi, I have searched through many threads but havent seen the advice i was looking for.

I am in need of a compressor for vocals that will bring very loud aggresive vocals and softer vocals to te same volume. My price range is 250-400. Any advice would be appretiated.

FMR RNC :)

never heard of that could you shoot me some more info? Thanks

www.fmraudio.com

It is regarded as the best compressor under $1000. And it costs less than 200. And do a search on RNC on this bbs. That should list a zillion topics about this compressor

The best unlinkable stereo compressor under $1000.... Never could understand why they made it unlinkable.

It would have made it more expensive I'm sure and that's very not-FMR-like. I don't own one but from what I've heard it would have been worth $200 if it was just a single channel unit. So the fact that it's stereo is a nice bonus. :)

I agree with what's been said about the RNC. But for what you are describing, you may want to split the task into two steps, one comp set faily fast attack/release, a second slow in more of a 'fader riding' effect, depending of course on the sound your going for. It can be a lot for one comp to bite off. (Hey, two RNC's aint too many to have around if your going analog, right?:D
Doing part of it in software with volume automation (or better yet pre-effect gain envelopes) is another way to tackle it. Better I think.;)
Cheers.

So make it mono, and even more inexpensive. Guess I don't appreciate its utility since I rarely compress stereo signals outboard.

It kills on stereo drum kit mixes and overheads.

Even with 'Supernice' were getting into the area of mic technique and mix-riding IMHO.:)

This is one that's pretty universal. FMR Audio RNC is the only game in town. They've crushed all competition, and are trying to do the same thing to midrange preamps with RNP.-Richie

I have four RNC's and sometimes I have 2 or even more units linked together. IF you are careful with gain structure, you won't get too much noise in there.

I've been very happy with using the RNC ("clean"), and the
Joe Meek MC2 ("color") on vocals.
You can track with the RNC to keep levels under control,
then use the Meek during mixdown.
They are a terrific combo IMHO at the home or project studio
level to open up tone options.
Maybe www.joemeek.com still has some demo units for sale.

the mindprint envoice is a real nice pre/comp/eq.. only 299 at samash.. check it out
